Biography

Margaret, the daughter of Timothy Whalan and Margaret Kelly,[1] was christened at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church at Clonmel 8 miles from Newcastle. In c1806 Patrick GRADY & Margaret WHALAN married at Newcastle Tipperary (both their death certificates) She and Patrick had eight children born in Ireland, three of whom died as infants.

In 1828 the family emigrated from Waterford to Australia on the City of Edinburgh, with mother Margaret, listed as Mary Gredy/Grady. She emigrated to join her convict husband Patrick Grady, with her children: Mary (c1807 - 1880), Ellen (c1812 - 1894), James (c1815 – 1887), Judith (c1816 - 1883) and Patrick (c1823 - 1892).

In 1844 Patrick and Margaret applied for a license to occupy 640 acres of land in the Brisbane Valley (Essington) area. They are believed to be the first settlers in the area along with their daughter Mary and her husband Samuel Rawson.

She is buried near Oberon NSW. Her grave at Foleys Creek (Brisbane Valley) is one of Australia’s first consecrated bush graves.

Research Notes

  • Margaret is believed to have been baptised at St Marys, Clonmel, in Irishtown in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore | Counties of Waterford, Tipperary. The available baptism registers start in 1890.
  • Story on Margaret and Patrick Grady in the Mercury 23 July 1988 referenced in (presumably Lithgow Mercury available on trove to 1954)

Seven years for clothes theft meant a new life for Englishman - lists children's marriages of Samuel and Mary Rawson (Grady)

  • Charles Whalan is listed as a witness to Margaret's death. A Charles Whalan dies Bathurst 1864 (Registration number 2832) His parents are Charles and Elizabeth. He could be either Charles born Sydney 1811 or Parramatta 1837. In 1810 Charles Whalan m Elizabeth Berry Volume reference V1810951 3A In 1836 Charles Whalan m Elizabeth Harper at Sydney, St Andrew's Scots Church Volume reference V18362860 74A. As he is Protestant this supports the theory that he is not related to Margaret. They are presumably descended from Pensioner/convict Charles of the Albermarle 1791 who came with his family, including a 12 year old son Charles.
