Biography

Margaret "Maggie" Whalen was born about 1865 in Yates Co, NY, the daughter of Irish immigrants Michael Whalen and Mary Kane. The family settled on a farm in Gorham, Ontario Co, NY. She married Peter Houghtaling between 1880 and 1900 and had one child, Edith, around 1897. The family lived in Penn Yan, Yates, NY from by 1900 to at least 1910 and possibly as late as 1917, when granddaughter Francis Millard was born in NY, but they were in Hamtramck, Michigan by 1920. Margaret Whalen Houghtaling died in 1928 in Detroit, Michigan.

Family history places her in Binghamton, NY as an adult but we cannot find any record of this.
