Biography

W. G. WHELEN DIES AT 78 - the death occurred last night in Kirkland District Hospital of William George Whelen, after a short illness. He had been employed by Sylvanite Mine until three weeks ago when he became ill. He was in his 78th year. Mr. Whelen was born in Shawville, Que., but came to Ontario about 60 years ago. He has lived in Kirkland Lake for 18 years and at the time of his death was residing with his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Rowe, 47 Government road east. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, in October, 1943. He is a veteran of World War I and lived for some time in Powassan and Kapuskasing. Later he moved to Haileybury. He was member of the Canadian Legion. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Rowe, Mrs. H. Vernon of Englehart and Mrs. W. J. McGill of Harcourt, Ont. One son, James Whelen, lives in Malartic, Que. In addition there are 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Trinity United Church at 2p.m. Thursday. Interment will be in Kirkland Cemetery.

He enlisted as a private for the Great War with the 162nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, with previous service noted with the 23rd Regiment, (The Northern Fusiliers, or The Northern Pioneers). After arriving in England he was subsequently discharged due to old age in 1917.
