Biography

Joseph Whatton was born about 1813. He was an “iron melter”.

In 1841, he married Susannah Crump from Sedgeley.

They had five daughters. They emigrated to New Zealand on the Harkaway in 1858 and settled near Wellington.

In the mid 1860s they moved to Greytown, then Taranaki.

In 1885 Joseph and Susannah returned to the Wairarapa, settling this time in Masterton on the Upper Plain.

He passed away in 1909, aged 96. He is buried in Archer Street cemetery. [1]
