Biography


Augustus owned a large grocery, warehouse, and livery business in downtown Marthasville, later named Atlanta. He married Mary Grey Danforth November 13, 1845 in Campbell County, Georgia. Children were Frances M born about 1846 (married John Dix Watson), Henry C J born about 1847, John C about 1849, Artemesia "Artie" born November 22, 1853. She married Thomas Kendrell Carter. Harvey William (41255598)born September 10, 1858. He married Julia Morris. Annie born about 1861, married (1)Lawrence Hammonds, (2) Joe Privett. Augustus Gilbert born November 1862, married Carzolia Lee Richardson, and Alziria born about 1866, married William Henry Bice.

June 17 1861, Augustus sold 15 Army tents to the CSA @$15.00 each for a total of $225.00 Aug 27 1863 sold 10 more for $150.00 Augustus served in 1st Confederate Infantry and 36th Regiment Ga Infantry (Villepigue's)

Augustus W Wheat took oath as judge of the county court of Campbell County, GA signed June 5, 1866.
