Biography

John was born in 1860 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, the son of Emery Orin Wheat and Julia Ann Rane. His father died before John was 20, and he cared for his mother thereafter. John took up trade, dealing initially in dry goods. At age 24 in 1884, he married Georgiana Bull Edams in Stephenson County, IL. For a few years in the mid 1890s, he relocated the family for business to Boone, Iowa. The family returned to Illinois to settle in Freeport. In later years, John became a real estate agent. Over the years, he and Georginia had eight children together. John passed away in Freeport in 1930. He is buried with his wife in the Freeport City Cemetery.
