Origin

John Wheatleigh or Wheatley^[1] was born c. 1530 at Tingsboro, Somerset, England, a son of Thomas Wheatleigh.^{[citation needed]}

John and his brother Thomas were Captain and Lieutenant, respectively, in the 1544-45 campaigns of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, at Scotland and France.^[2]

The brothers obtained estates in 1547. John settled at Wells, and Thomas at Frome, at Mendlip Hills in Somersetshire.^[3]

Marriage and Children

John married Mary Unknown, who was mentioned in his will and left her own will, filed at the Wells probate registry on April 20, 1595.^[2]

Note: Nathaniel and Richard both spelled their names differently, "Whately," reason unknown.^[2]

The Barkers were a prominent family of Sonning, with a 300 year history there owning the estate of Holmes Park.^[2]
