Biography

Origin

Elizabeth was baptized on July 18th, 1602 at Warley's End in Cranfield.[1] She was a daughter of Thomas Wheeler. [1] [2]

Cranfield is about 10 miles northwest of Pulloxhill, Bedfordshire, which is the place of Elizabeth's marriage. [3]

Marriage

Elizabeth married Allen Bread, the son of John Breade and Agnes Prechat on November 14th, 1622 at Pulloxhill. [4] [5] (the best evidence for the spelling reports it was "Bread," until the 1700's, after which it was spelled "Breed".) [6] [7]

Elizabeth (Wheeler) Bread was the mother of all of Allen Bread's children. [8] After Elizabeth died, Allen married, as his 2nd wife, Elizabeth (Unknown) Knight.[5]

Children of Allen and Elizabeth (Wheeler): [5][4]

  1. Allen Breed, II baptized January 27th, 1630 at Pulloxhill [4]; m. Mary Sargent (she died November 30th, 1671). They had 7 children.
  2. Elizabeth Breed baptized December 26th, 1634 at Pulloxhill [4]; died before 1676; married William Merriam about 1653 and lived in Lynn.[6]
  3. John Breed born after 1635 in Lynn ; died June 28, 1678; mar 1) Sarah Hathorne, 2) Sarah Hart

These children were included by Cutter, but were actually grandchildren (sons of Allen Breed, II)[5]

  1. Timothy Breed was a grandson, the son of Allen Breed, II
  2. Joseph Breed was a grandson, the son of Allen Breed, II

Death and Legacy

Elizabeth died at Lynn, before 28 March 1656, when Allen Breed married, as his 2nd, to another Elizabeth, who had been twice a widow, of William Ballard, and of William Knight.[5]

Research Notes

This profile reported a death date: April 18, 1637, without evidence or appropriate citation.

It also listed the baptism date of Elizabeth's second child, Elizabeth, as "1631/2" and her third and last child, John, as "before 1634". The source citation was the Marcia Lindberg article from The Essex Genealogist. The article based that information on transcripts from the Archdeconry of Bedford, England. Those transcripts were incomplete. At the time the article was written in 1991, the Bedfordshire Parish Registers were not commonly held by historical societies. They are a 44 volume collection and not many were printed. It would have been a rare resource at that time. Today they have been digitized and are readily available on Archive.org. It is in these registers we see that Elizabeth was baptized on 26 Dec 1634. That would make a 1634 baptism for John improbable. Since John is not listed in the parish register we can assume that he was born after the family migrated to Lynn. That would give us, at best, a birth for John as "after 1635".

Wheeler-9637 and Wheeler-1051 appear to represent the same person because: Same baptism, same marriage, death is at variance but 1656 looks better.
posted by David Cooper
According to The American Genealogist 14:2 (published 1937), Elizabeth was "probably" the daughter of Thomas Wheeler's first wife rather than Rebecca Sayre.
