Research Notes

Cranfield parish register only starts in 1600, and there's no baptism of an Elizabeth daughter of John. But there is a baptism on 18 Jul 1602 of Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Wheler of Warley. What's the evidence that she was the daughter of John?

Elizabeth was born about 1603 in England. She was the daughter of John Wheeler (1563 - 1643) and Elizabeth Bread Wheeler (1563 - 1644) [2]

Elizabeth married Thomas Halsey about 1625. These are their known children:

  1. Thomas Halsey (1626 - 1688)
  2. Isaac Halsey (1628 - 1725)
  3. Daniel Halsey (1638 - 1682)

Elizabeth was murdered in 1649 [3]

The only other occurrence of this kind [referring to certain Indians having been hired to commit arson of a settler’s home] which happened in Southampton was the murder of Mrs. Thomas Halsey, in 1649, which caused some apprehension of a general insurrection against the English. A messenger was immediately sent to the magistrates to summon Wyandanch to appear before them. “His counselors fearing that he would be summarily condemned to death by way of retaliation, advised him not to obey the summons. Before he expressed his own opinion, he submitted the case to Mr. Gardiner, who happened to be lodging in his wigwam that same night. By his advice, he set out immediately for Southampton, Mr. G. agreeing to remain hostage to the tribe, for the safety of their beloved chief. With amazing celerity, he not only accomplished the journey of twenty-five miles, but actually apprehended on his way, and delivered to the magistrates, the murderers of the woman; who, instead of being his own subjects, proved to be Pequot Indians from the main; some of whom were generally lurking on the Island for the purpose of promoting disturbances between the natives and the new settlers. These men being sent to Hartford, were there tried, convicted, and executed.”[4]

All the information gathered from various HALSEY genealogies claim that PHOEBE/PHEBE HALSEY was murdered by Indians in this house in Southampton. The Southampton Historical and Colonial Society has lots of info on THOMAS and PHEBE....The 'story' about PHOEBE is that '2 or 3 Indians from Connecticut bent on starting an uprising among the Long Island Indians, and wiping out the whites, broke into the HALSEY homestead. The Indians were captured, sent back to Connecticut and executed.' ..This is from EDNA LEE POTTER of the Southampton Colonial Society publication. June 17th, 1995. [5]

It was illegal to have two names until much later. Do remove the Phebe.

I believe there is no evidence that her mother's name was Breed/Bread. For what reason is she called a half-sister of John?

What is our rationale for allowing her to have two given names, in this era? Phoebe and Elizabeth are both ancient names, that have nothing to do with each other. "Middle" names in this era, in this culture, is basically unheard of. Right?

Are we asserting her family called her Phebe as a pet name, or something? I worry this dual name encodes an earlier research error.

You are correct about "Phoebe" being a relic from an error. Elizabeth is being conflated with another woman, Phoebe Barrett, who is said to be a wife in one of those old terrible family history books. This Thomas Halsey was married to Elizabeth Wheeler, and then after her death, he married Ann Johns, widow of Edward Johns. All of his children were from Elizabeth. See here, The English Ancestry of Thomas Halsey of Southampton, Long Island, by Raymond David Wheeler, published by Thomas Halsey Family Association, c/o Southampton Colonial Society, Southampton, NY, 1995. page 14. https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/462602-redirection

Wheeler-1902 and Wheeler-10170 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband, birth and death dates are similar.

The best guess on this Elizabeth is that she was born about 1599, see page 3 of the 1998 "Descendants of Henry Wheeler" work on the Wheeler name project. The Elizabeth baptized 1602 of Thomas married Allen Breed 14 Nov 1622 apparently.

Wheeler-15417 and Wheeler-1902 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate wife. No sources for Wheeler-15417. Unless sources provided, merge into details for Wheeler-1902.
