Biography

Henry was born about 1819 in Ohio, though there is a wide range of dates, earlier and later in the available records. The 1850 Census of Cass, Fulton, Illinois, showed him with wife Berthena (and her four children by deceased husband Teele Pilcher) [1], living adjacent to Rebecca Wheeler, the widow of John Wheeler, who died in 1847; this data is considered strong evidence that Henry was a son of this John Wheeler. John Wheeler married Rebecca (Long) Herbert about 1832 in Richland County, OH, after his first wife (Elizabeth) died; around 1835, they moved to Cass Township, Fulton Co., IL. [2]. In the early 1850's, Henry and Berthena moved to Iowa, where they were found on the 1856 Iowa State Census of Washington Twp, Washington Co., Iowa, the 1860 Federal Census of Dayton, Iowa Co., Iowa, and 1870 Census of English, Iowa Co., Iowa. From the census data, Henry had three children by Berthena Mary/Polly A., Susan P., and Margaret; see Berthena's profile for details. By 1880, they had moved to Saline Co., Nebraska, where both are buried. Probate records of Saline Co., Nebraska, Petition for Appointment of Administrators, states that he died June 28, 1900 in Herndon, Rawlins, Kansas and lists his three daughters as Mary Thomas, 50, of North English, Iowa, Iowa, Susan Buck, 45, of Wilber, Nebraska, and Ella Nicolay, 40, of Herndon, Rawlins, Kansas. [3]. Henry served in the Civil War in the 18th Iowa Infantry, Company D. [4].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

Full documentation of my research relating to Henry Wheeler and his ancestry is available at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RX0Zbte-omZZj-MEzqozC7PMYNjBor2i/view?usp=sharing. This research includes Autosomal DNA data collected from several Wheeler cousins that supplements and firms up the paper-trail evidence connecting several of the Wheeler's living in Fulton Co., Illinois to the family of John and Gracie Wheeler Richland Co., Ohio and, originally Moon Township, Allegheny Co., PA. This is solid evidence contradicting the pedigrees of many which cite different parentage for these Fulton Co., Wheeler with no sources that I have been able to find.
