Biography

"Edwin Stewart Wheeler, president of the Wheeler Varnish Works, was born at Oregon , Ogle county, Illinois, on the 5th of April, 1858, and is a son of Edwin R. and Harriet P. (Stewart) Wheeler.[1] His prestige as a manufacturer has been gained by his subordinating the profession for which he prepared himself and in which he achieved success, for in 1879 [sic] he was graduated in the law department of Northwestern University, with the degree of Bachelor of Laws.[2] For the ensuing year he was associated with one of the representative law firms of Chicago, he then established his residence at Mason City, Iowa where he continued in the successful practice of his profession for several years, as did he later at Nora Springs, Floyd county , that state, besides having been simultaneously a member of the banking firm of Shepardson & Wheeler. In 1885 Mr. Wheeler retired from the work of his profession to accept the position of western representative and general agent for the Newark Fire Insurance Company, of Newark , New Jersey. As special agent and adjuster he had charge of the entire business of this company in eight states, and in 1888 he established his residence and business head quarters in Chicago. He continued his effective services with this representative insurance corporation until the 1st of July, 1904, when he became associated with William H. Noake and R. W. Clough in the purchase of the plant and business of the DeGolyer varnish works. At this time the title of Noake Wheeler-Clough Company was adopted , and later the same was changed to the Wheeler -Clough Company, which was retained until the adoption of the present title, the Wheeler Varnish Works.

"In politics Mr. Wheeler is a staunch and effective advocate of the principles of the Republican party and while engaged in the practice of law in Iowa he was active in political affairs. Mr. Wheeler became adjutant in the Seventh In fantry Regiment of the Jowa National Guard, and he resigned this position upon his remova! to Chicago, where he identified himself with the First Regiment of the Illinois National Guard, in which he continued his membership three years and is now a member of the Veteran Corps. In the Masonic fraternity Mr. Wheeler is affiliated with Oak Park Lodge, No. 540, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, and his maximum York Rite affiliation is with Siloam Commandery, No. 54, Knights Templars. He is identified also with Oriental Consistory of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and with Medinah Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is a life member of the Illinois Athletic Association , is affiliated with the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, and holds membership in the Rotary Club of Chicago, the Pistakee Country Club and the Min-Dako-Wis Tribe, composed of devotees of outdoor sports, from the states f Minnesota , the Dakotas and Wisconsin , as the title implies. He finds his chief recreation in hunting and fishing. The family home is at 200 South Grove street, Oak Park."

"On the 29th of September, 1879 , was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Wheeler to Miss Chloe Irene Gaylord , of Nora Springs, Iowa , and they have three sons, Edwin Gaylord, Wilberforce Richard, and Henry Duncan."[3]

Edwin was 67 years old when he died on 19 December 1925 in Rochester, Olmsted Co., Minnesota.[4][5]
