Biography

John Wheeler, son of Thomas Wheeler (abt.1571-abt.1643) and Jane (Mitchell) Wheeler (abt.1590-), was born shortly before 14 Mar 1627, the date of his Christening at Clerkenwell St James, Middlesex, England (London). [1]

There are two genealogical halves to the life of John Wheeler, the first half takes place in London England, but then, on or about 1667, John Wheeler emigrates to North America, and the second portion of his life is played out in New London Connecticut. Ample source documentation is readily available documenting these two eras of his life as disparate identities, but the only known narrative connecting the two halves of his life was authored by genealogists, Raymond David Wheeler and Gordon Boyce Wheeler, in the "Wheeler Family History" in 1993. [2] This biography is a fairly complete narrative with a robust library of source references documenting most of the significant events in the England and Connecticut portion of the life of John Wheeler, and it offers a reasonable, possible, and probable case that the John Wheeler of Clerkenwell, England, and New London, Connecticut are one and the same person. However, the solitary piece of "documentation adhesive," offered in the genealogy, to bind the England story to the New London, Connecticut story is a bit of hearsay found in the Williams Genealogy [3] noting that daughter "Sarah Wheeler said she was born in the city of London; that her honored Father, John Wheeler was invited over to New England and that she came with him, to her Uncle Wheeler's in New London, Connecticut, where her father lived the remainer of his days." This documentation connection is perhaps not as robust as one would desire, nor does the Williams author cite the information source for this tidbit; nevertheless this record does provide a credible binding link between the two halves of the life of John Wheeler. As a counterpoint to this connection assertion, it should also be noted that none of the names of the children of the second marriage of John Wheeler (born and/or living in Connecticut), as asserted in the Wheeler Genealogy, appear in the probate records for the 1691-1699 sizeable estate of John Wheeler, nor are any of these sons connected to the 1732 distribution of the significant real estate holdings of John Wheeler to "his only son" Joshua Wheeler, though this may be because they were all deceased by that date. Nevertheless, this biography will adopt the family-genealogical model proposed by the Wheelers as the probable family structure and history of John Wheeler, based on this connecting factiod and the balance of the collected, and known factual information.

The baptism of John Wheeler was recorded in the Parish Records of the Old St. James Church at Clerkenwell, England, as was his 10 July 1649 marriage to Mary Bryan, [4] with whom John had a son, Robert and a daughter Jane. Unfortunately, Mary died young and John's second marriage to Mary Morgan is subsequently recorded on 27 Nov 1662 at St. Bene't church at Paul's Wharf, London, [5] a little over a mile away from St. James Church where he was baptized and first married. Daughter Sarah, the first child of this marriage, was born 6 Feb. 1666/7 at London. About this time wanderlust strikes John Wheeler, and he sets out with his family to seek his fortune in the New World; resettling in New London, Connecticut where his name first appears in 1667; presumably to be near his brother Thomas, who had made the journey a number of years earlier, during the Great Migration, and was living in North Stonington, New London, Connecticut at the time John Wheeler made the journey. John Wheeler, now a New London resident, becomes the father of another three children with his second wife Mary (Wheeler) Morgan, but she, too, departs this life at a young age sometime prior to 1674, leaving John with a growing family of young children. John Wheeler, now forty seven years of age, married the young widow of William Ridge, Mrs Elizabeth (Standbridge) Ridge, fifteen years his Junior, with whom he fathered another six children.

The annals of history affirm the notion that John Wheeler was a well-educated, industrious, and prosperous maritime merchant in New London, engaged in the import - export trade of goods. By 1691 John Wheeler's business had grown to the point where he had accumulated sufficient assets to acquire ownership of the transatlantic, ocean-going cargo ship The Zebulon built to his specifications; as well as partnerships in several vessels engaged in trade with the West Indies. Furthermore, John Wheeler owned numerous properties in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, undoubtedly associated with the warehousing of mercantile goods. It was shortly before or just after the maiden voyage of The Zebulon had returned to New London from London that John Wheeler unexpectedly crossed the barrier separating the mortal and immortal, something we all ultimately face, with his death on 16 Dec 1691 at the age of 64. Unfortunately, John left this life with inadequate preparation to care for for the young wife, and five minor children he left behind; and he had prepared no plan of succession for his business interests. His death left unpaid the debts associated with the maiden voyage The Zebulon and his European investors seized the vessel in lieu of debt payment. Nevertheless, his estate was still appraised at £1382 03d 07p, a very sizable estate worth somewhere between $250K and $500K in 2022 US dollars, and this wealth would have placed his family in the upper echelon of the New London social structure of that day. This nest egg should have provided a fully adequate lifestyle for his young family into their adult years. Unfortunately, his estate was caught in a turf battle between the totalitarian ecclesiastical government run by Rev. Gurdon Saltonstall Esq. (1666-1724), (Saltonstall was the pastor of the New London Congregational Church, also head of the New London civil government and also the presiding judge of the New London court system--essentially the King and HIgh Priest of New London) and a small group of religious independents, called the Rogerines, headed by John Rogers who in their quest for religious freedom threatened the absolute power of Saltonstall's Kingdom. Shortly after John Wheeler's death, his widow, Elizabeth married a man named Richard Steer, a published author from Southold, New York, who unfortunately for the family of John Wheeler, had dared to stand up to Saltonstall's totalitarian ecclesiastical New London power structure and had issued a written, public condemnation of the loathsome and tyrannical abuses Salstonstall's religious regime had unjustly perpetrated upon the Rogerines. This proclamation by Steer, of course, kindled the anger and hatred of his "Highness" Gurdon Saltonstall who for some "unexplainable" reason (e.g. retribution) in the role of presiding Judge of the New London probate court, froze the assets of John Wheeler's estate in probate court; the probate court would not release a single cent for the provision of the young children in a family now deprived of a breadwinner. Furthermore Saltonstall remanded John Wheeler's children, formerly of high society, to become indentured servant apprentices; consequently, of John Wheeler's four youngest sons, only one, Joshua Wheeler survived this ordeal to adulthood, while the other three sons died premature deaths. The assets of the estate were frozen in the New London probate court for a period of eight years, dating from the death of John in 1691 until 1699, when Richard Steer, facing real and threatened lawsuits from the creditors of John Wheeler's estate, made a groveling appeal to the probate court to release the assets; Saltonstall's ego was placated and the personal assets of the estate were finally released in a distribution to the creditors and widow of the estate. In a subsequent 1732 land deal; [6] Joshua Wheeler, is declared to be the "the only son of John Wheeler" wherein he sells the extensive land holdings of his father John Wheeler, to another New London trade magnate, Solomon Coit; the holdings were noted to be located in the "Province of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland" and this real estate was sold to Coit for a sum of £2000. It is interesting to note that these land holdings of the John Wheeler's estate sold for 45% more than the entire appraised value of the estate in 1691, and suggests that the value of the estate had been grossly undervalued in 1691, these assets had been overlooked in the 1691 appraisal, or perhaps changing commercial interests or property improvements had increased the perceived value of the holdings.

    2. ) {Editorial: The John Wheeler of this profile was a rich man and very clearly well connected with the powers that be in England and the Colonies in order to amass land holdings in Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Furthermore it was likely he was well educated and passed on his knowledge to his son (otherwise why would two parties from New London, Connecticut have transacted the real estate deal in Delaware if not for advantageous legal and tax reasons?) Finally, the claim made by Joshua Wheeler in this real estate deal that he is the only son of John Wheeler, is, by necessity, required to mean that he was the only surviving son of John Wheeler. Question, why wasn't John Wheeler's real estate disposed of in 1691 at the time of his death?}

  6. ) {Editorial notes by Beebe-1766: This was a sizeable, but not massive estate, certainly ample to place the John Wheeler family in the well-to-do social strata of Colonial New London. It is interesting to observe some of the heavy-handedness of the New London Probate Court. First of all, the probate court was clearly stonewalling the disbursement of funds from the estate, to the widow, the heirs, and the creditors. In fact, for eight long years after the death of John Wheeler, it appears that none of the assets of the estate had been released, and by this time the creditors were threatening to sue the widow Elizabeth Wheeler's new husband, Richard Steer, for monies they were owed by the estate of John Wheeler. Furthermore, there were no disbursements for the provision of the family until 1700, nine years later and even then a total of £0 was allowed for the provision and care of the two youngest children. When the assets of the estate were finally disbursed in 1700, the children of John Wheeler were apprenticed (essentially remanded to slave labor in return for being taught a trade skill), and estates debts were paid; but even then only £676 of the original £1382 appraised assets were distributed at this point in time. Apparently the balance of the estate, likely the real estate portion, continued to be held by the probate court until it was finally released to Joshua Wheeler 1723, when he sold the land holdings of his "father John Wheeler" to Solomon Coit, for £2000. This land sale by Joshua Wheeler explicity states that he is the only son of John Wheeler, thereby absolutely affirming that his brothers; Zaccheus, William, and John, had all died prior to this land sale, leading one to wonder how much culpability did this tyrannical probate court have in their early deaths?}

  1. ) History of New London: page 146: In 1667, appear {in the records of New London} John Baldwin, Peter Treby, Joseph Truman, and John Wheeler.
  2. ) History of New London: page 238: After 1680, John Wheeler took a prominent position in the maritime business of the town. A vessel was built for him in 1689 and 1690, for European trade, and sent out under the command of Capt. Samuel Chester. The owner died before the first voyage was completed, and the vessel assigned to his creditors, merchants in London.
  3. ) History of New London: page 252: Court Records: Capt. George Denison and John Wheeler fined 15s for not attending public worship.
  4. ) History of New London: page 290: George Tonge was 68 years of age in 1668. His wife was probably younger. Hempstead's diary mentions the death of "Goody Tongue", December 1st, 1713; this was undoubtedly his relict. No other family of the name appears amoung the inhabitants. The inn so long kept by George Tonge and his widows and heirs, stood on the bank between present Pearl and Tilley Streets. George Tonge and his wife and children, as legatees of Richard Poole, inherited a considerable tract of land in the North Parish, which went into the Baker and Wickwire families. Of George Tonge the second, (born 1658) no information whatever has been recovered; but we may assume with probability that he was the father of John Tonge, who married Anna Wheeler, November 21, 1702 and had a numerous family of sons and Daughters.
  5. ) History of New London: page 330: John Wheeler, died December 16th, 1691.
    1. ) No connection has been traced between John Wheeler of New London and Thomas and Isaac Wheeler contemporary inhabitants of Stonington. John is first presented to us as part owner of a vessel called the Zebulon in 1667. He entered largely into mercantile concerns, traded with the West Indies, and had a vessel built under his own superintendence, which at the period of his death had just returned from an English Voyage.
    2. ) He left a son, Zaccheus, sixteen years of age, who died without issue in 1703; also sons Joshua eleven years of age, and William, eight. These lived to old age, and left descendants. Elizabeth, relict of John Wheeler, married Richard Steer--a person of whom very little is known, except in connection with the Wheeler family. He appears to have had a good business education, and to have been esteemed for capacity and intelligence, but his native place and parentage are unknown, and he stands disconnected with posterity.

He was a merchant engaged in foreign trade and occupied a prominant position in the maritime business of the town, and was part owner of several vessels. In 1689-90 he had a vessel built for the European trade and sent it out under command of Capt Samuel Chester. His death occurred before the voyage was completed.

John Wheeler was baptized on 14 Mar 1626/7 and he died at New London, Connecticut on 16 Dec. 1691. It is probable that his first marriage was at Clerkenwell, St. James, England on 10 Jul 1649, to MARY BRYAN; with a second probable marriage St. Benet Paul's Wharf, Middlesex, England on 27 Nov 1662, to MARY MORGAN. (From the Registers of St. Benedict and St. Peter, Paul's Wharf, London, Willoughby A. Littledale, ed.; London, 1910, Vol. 39 of Harlein Society Publications, v. 2, 46). John Wheeler, on or about 1674 and now living in Connecticut in the Colonies, married third at New London, ELIZABETH (STANBRIDGE) RIDGE, widow of William Ridge, whom she had married first at Clerkenwell, St. James, England on 8 Oct 1661. Research Notes

  1. ) 2022-12-17: The pre-merge biography stated, without evidence, that John Wheeler was born in Cranston, Bedfordshire, England, but then was baptized at Clerkenwell St James, Middlesex, England at London. Notes: there is no Cranston Bedfordshire England (at least not now--google maps can't find it) there is however a Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. 2. ) 2022-12-17: There appears to be a second John Wheeler living in the Fairfield Connecticut area, possibly emigrated from Cranston, England, and possibly another John Wheeler living in Maryland, and that John Wheeler came to the colonies in 1652, while this John Wheeler was still in England at that time. As of this date little or no information on these other John Wheelers.

This profile has all the same dates as John Wheeler (bef.1627-1691). Something seems wrong. They look like different people.

It is a bit confusing with the Rootsweb secondary source information. That information and the children there appears to relate to John Wheeler (bef.1627-1691) rather than this John.

Any assistance in clarifying would be appreciated.

It appears to me, based on location, that Mary (Bryan) Wheeler (1627-) is more likely the wife of John Wheeler (bef.1627-1691), Not John Wheeler (bef.1627-1691). Mary (Morgan) Wheeler (abt.1645-1674) as well.

Looks like there are some combinations here that just don't work...death date, marriages, says that wife "Dorothy"

Wheeler-3179 and Wheeler-2957 appear to represent the same person because: Not sure that these are the same person, I think one was married to Mary Morgan, and one was married to Mary Bryan. One of them came to the new world, the other did not....

Wheeler-5398 and Wheeler-1416 are not ready to be merged because: Not enough to merge.

Wheeler-3179 and Wheeler-1416 do not represent the same person because: Despite having same death date and same name, multiple marriages and different birth years make it appear that they are different people
