Biography

William Wheeler, the son of John Wheeler and Agnes (Yeoman) Wheeler, was baptized at St. Thomas' in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England on September 18, 1623.[1][2]

William would have been about 15 when his parents and younger siblings emigrated to New England about 1639. It is uncertain whether he emigrated with them or remained in England with his older brothers Edward, John and Adam.[3] He may have emigrated with his parents and been the William Wheeler of Salem, Massachusetts who was fined in 1645 for being "overtaken in drink,"[4] although it seems more likely that that William was somehow related to Thomas Wheeler of Salem, Lynn and Stonginton. In any event, even if William emigrated to New England with his parents, he appears to have returned to England by the the early 1650s, as (1) his father's will indicates that he was living in England as of 1668 and (2) records of the baptism of children of a William and Margaret Wheeler at St. Edmund's in 1654-1661 (see below) very probably relate to him.

William appears to have married a woman named Margaret, most likely in 1653 or early 1654 in or near Salisbury, England.[5] William and Margaret had the following children, all baptized at St. Edmund's in Salisbury, England:

  1. Margaret, b. December 15, 1654,[6] bpt. January 14, 1655,[6] bur. May 28, 1656 in Salisbury, England[7]
  2. Margaret, b. August 31, 1657,[8] bpt. September 13, 1657[8]
  3. Martha, bpt. September 7, 1661[9] or September 29, 1661[10]

William was living (or at least believed by his father to be living) in England in March 1668 when his father made a bequest to him in his will.[11]

It appears likely that William's first wife died before 1672, as a St. Edmund's parish record shows the marriage of William Wheeler and Elizabeth Mills in that year. William and Elizabeth had the following child who was baptized at St. Edmunds:

  1. Elizabeth, bpt. October 5, 1673,[12] bur. December 16, 1676 in Salisbury, England[13]

No record of William's date of death or burial has been found. Based on the baptism of his presumed child Elizabeth in October 1673 in Salisbury, England. he most like died in or after 1673 in or near Salisbury.
