Biography

Birth

2 Jan 1678/9 in Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts[1]

Marriage

Husband: Elisha Smith
Wife: Elizabeth Wheelock
Marriage: 15 Jan 1699/1700 in Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts[2]

Children:

  1. Seth Smith (b. 1701/2 in Medfield)[3]
  2. Esther Smith (b. 1702/3 in Windham)[4]

Death

The Windham, Connecticut Vital records list a death for "Elizebeth Simth, wife of Elisha" on 20th January 1703.[5] However, Elisha's probate file shows four children, and a widow Elizabeth. The Windham, Connecticut Vital Records record the births of two children, Martha and Mary, to Elisha Smith and Elizabeth after 1703. So either there is an error in the death record, or Elisha remarried to another Elizabeth.[6]

Research Notes

According to birth records found for Elizabeth Wheelock, either this Elizabeth married Elisha Smith or another Elizabeth Wheelock married Elisha Smith . This Elizabeth's Familysearch record ID is L23W-M5V and the other one is LL4Y-9BD. The marriage record only shows the name Elizabeth Wheelock without any parents names to show which one married Elisha. Familysearch has Elisha married to both of the Elizabeth's. Although parents were not named in the marriage record, after the death of Elisha, Ralph Wheelock, brother to this Elizabeth Wheelock was appointed guardian of the minor Seth Smith.

I've updated Martha and Mary's mother to Elizabeth Unknown. I will add some research notes regarding her possible identity. But given the death record for Elizabeth Wheelock Smith, the ten year gap between children, and the fact that Seth and Esther were appointed guardians when Elisha died and Mary and Martha were not, suggests that Elisha was married to two different Elizabeths.
