He married Chloe Eddy in 1806 in Smithfield, New York.[citation needed]
Joel and Chloe had the following known children:
Mariam Veriah
Chloe
Charity
Sophronia
Joel, Jr.
Lewis
Mary
Almira
According to census records, they settled in Hartland, Niagara County, New York before 1840. In about 1853, they lived with their son Lewis in neighboring Lockport. Chloe passed away in about 1861 (her headstone is difficult to read). In 1860, Joel is enumerated with Rachel Wheelock, who was the same age as Chloe. Its not clear if Chloe's date of death is incorrect and Rachel was a second wife, or if the enumerator made a mistake on the census entry.
Joel passed away in 1871 in Sweden, New York.
Research notes
Joel is likely the son of Joel from Shrewsbury who lived in New Ipswich. Besides the alignment of names, dates, and places, there are two additional reasons to think that Joel is the son of Joel from New Ipswich.
Joel Wheelock, Jr. is listed as a private in Metcalf's Detached Artillery, New York Militia during the war of 1812.[2] Look at the original record, because the "Jr" is not transcribed into the index.
J Wheelock is enumerated in the 1810 Census living in Smithfield, Madison Co, NY. This is no doubt Joel Wheelock of New Ispwich, NH. J Welock, Jr is also enumerated there, ten dwellings above J Wheelock. This could be Joel Wheelock, Jr.[3]Again, look at the original record, the "Jr" is not transcribed into the index. This fits with the fact that his presumed sister (Betsey Wheelock) was also there in the same time frame.
