The death occurred a few days ago at Canna, near Mullewa, of Isaac Barron Wheelock, aged 75, a very old identity of the district. Deceased was camped out with his son, and on the morning of the 6th, after partaking of a breakfast of fried potatoes and onions, both complained of feeling ill, whilst a dog who ate the remnants which were thrown away was also affected. The old man rapidly became worse, and though the son gave him an emetic it had no effect, and he died shortly afterwards. It is thought that the pot in which the potatoes and onions were fried had been contaminated, as the tin in which it was kept had, it is believed, been previously used for some poison. As there were no suspicious circumstances attached to the case, it was decided that an inquest was not necessary.[4]
