Biography

Ely Whelan Jr. son of Eli Whelan Sr., was born 7 January 1796 and he died about 1857. Ely Whelan Jr. was married twice. The first marriage (contributing to the confusion of the son and his father) married Desire Green of New York. With her he had six children. His second wife Sally Wise Whelan Kingman is credited with cutting the family names and dates from the family bible in an attempt to conceal family records. Ely and Sally are recorded in the 1850 Census in Eaton County, Michigan. Ely owned 200 acres in Eaton Township of which he sold 45 acres to Sally before his death.

Eli Whelan Jr. was the father of Leonard Whelan, named in honor of his brother.
