Obituary

The West Wyalong Advocate, Monday 2 August 1948 - Page 3

Pioneer of Mining Days Passes On

With the death of Mrs. Maria Crampton, of Barnardo Street, another link in the chain of West Wyalong's early history has been broken, and another grand old pioneer of the goldfields has passed to her rest, aged 84 years.

The late Mrs. Crampton, who before her marriage was Maria Whiley, came to West Wyalong with her late husband, Mr. Alfred C. Crampton, shortly after their marriage at Condobolin.

She was born at Bathurst, where her people conducted an hotel, and later lived with them at Molong and Condobolin.

Mr. and Mrs. Crampton made their home in West Wyalong shortly after the outbreak of the goldfields in 1894, and Mr. Crampton's butchery was the first business of its kind to commence in the town. The shop was on the land where Mr. N. J. Tait's refreshment rooms are now located.

They reared their young family through the turbulent days of the early diggings, and Mrs. Crampton experienced the disabilities and inconveniences which were the common lot of the residents of those days. When the now famous "fever epidemic" broke out she helped to nurse the patients, even taking one of them to her own home.

Mr. Crampton disposed of his butchery business, later being engaged in contract hauling for mine-owners. In later years he was engaged in farming pursuits, after which he retired to live at his home in Barnardo Street. His death took place in 1920.

The late Mrs. Crampton was a gracious and kindly lady, and her gentle disposition endeared her to her relatives and many friends.

The funeral at West Wyalong on Friday afternoon was largely attended, the service being conducted by Canon W. E. Butler, and interment being made in the Church of England portion of the Wyalong Cemetery.

The late Mrs. Crampton is survived by three sons and four daughters. The sons are William (Guyra), Charles (West Wyalong), and Harry (Glen Davis); the daughters are Mrs. Charters (New Zealand), Mrs. G. Leadbitter (Tullibigeal), Mrs. G. A. McFadyen (Buralyang) and Mrs. T. Golding, (Nyngan).

Mrs. Crampton also leaves 33 grandchildren, and over 25 great-grandchildren. [5]
