Biography

Matthew Whipple, the eldest son of Matthew and Joan (______) Whipple of Bocking, Essex, England, was born about 1590 and died at Ipswich, Massachusetts September 28, 1647. He married Anne Hawkins May 7, 1622. She died about 1643 and on November 13, 1646 he married Rose ____, the widow of Lionel Chute.[1]

Matthew of Bocking, Essex, England was a wealthy Ipswich, Massachusetts resident. He was a deacon in the Congregational Church at Ipswich. He and his brother, John, received a grant of 200 acres in 1638.

When Matthew became seriously ill, on 7 May 1645, he drew up his will.[2] In it, he left L60 to his eldest son, John, and L40 each to his younger sons, Matthew and Joseph. To each of his daughters (Mary, Anna and Elizabeth) he left L20. He also left lesser bequests to the Elders of the Ipswich church, Nathaniel Rogers and John Norton, and to "the poor of Ipswich." He also stipulated that his brother, John Whipple, together with the Elders, be guardian for his children, and that his executors be the two Elders, his brother, John, and Robert Payne. His witnesses were John Norton and John Whipple.

He survived that illness and, on 13 September 1646, he made an addition to his earlier will to take into account his marriage to Rose, so that she would, after his death, receive L10 and retain all the property with which she had entered the marriage. His witnesses, for this addition were Theophilus Wilson and Thomas Knowlton.

Matthew died September 28, 1647, in Ipswich. His will was proved in the court of Ipswich on 28 Sep 1647.[3]

Re: his son Matthew (Whipple-912). In his will, Matthew Whipple (Whipple-12), who died 28 September 1647 in Ipswich, called John his oldest son. As John was born in September1632, Matthew (Whipple-912), son of Matthew (Whipple-12) would have been born after that. Blaine Whipple, author of 15 Generations of Whipples, Volume 1, published 2007, p. 196 suggests that Matthew was born about 1635. He also identifies two earlier sons named Matthew, one born about 1623 and buried in England 27 October 1623; and the other born about 1624 and buried 3 April 1627. 1635 seems a better estimate, though it probably could have been 1634. Birth in 1624 seems improbable.

You make a good argument, Rob. I would suggest adding this information to the son's profile along with your sources. Perhaps add a research note mentioning the previous date and why it's probably too early. I notice the PM on the son's profile hasn't been active recently, but it would be a good idea to post this same comment on the profile before making the changes.

It’s actually not that unusual to have two children with the same forename. If one was ill and thought not likely to survive another might be baptised with the same forename. If the sickly one then survived you end up with two John’s or whatever name it is. It’s a pain as far as researching goes but not that unusual.

Ann

Profiles for the additional children, if births/baptisms/burial can be located, could be added. That would clarify the situation.

Is there any record of when Mathew and his first wife Ann Hawkins immigrated? I noticed he is in the PGM category but Ann Hawkins is not. Wondering where they were when she died in 1643? If he came over in the PGM time frame wouldn't she have as well? This profile also says Joseph Whipple was born in 1640 in Mass., his mother is Ann Hawkins, so she would have to have come over with Mathew at the same time. Thanks for your help

Thanks Stephanie, you are right since they married in 1622 and Matthew is accepted as migrating in the PGM timeframe his wife Ann should be included as well.

Is there a source for the mother's maiden name being Fuller? The attached profile references a Yates Publishing marriage 29 Aug 1576, St Mary's Ch, Bocking, Essex, England. The 2006 Genealogist article seems to only refer to her as "Joan." [There is also "Joan Unknown" spouse profile attached to the father, but its not the one attached as the parent of this profile]

As a follow up, I've posted a g2g to have Matthew's mother's LNAB changed to unknown. If you have any objections/concerns, please comment! Thank you.

There's a typo in the Biography section (above): "He survived that illness and, on 13 Sep 1746, he made an addition..." should be 1646, not 1746.

Thank you, Timothy. Since you're very new to WikiTree, it's fine to do these sorts of comments. When you are more secure in your work, however, you'll want to just step up and fix this sort of simple errors. Thanks.

I'll fix for now.

I would love to be able to make those kinds of fixes, but I am not able to until I pass the Pre-1700 Certification (50 contributions!).

ok, I understand Timothy. Consider working on post 1700 profiles - perhaps your closer relatives - until you reach 50 and can get certified. Thanks.

Hi Dana, Perhaps you feel uncomfortable editing when the profile has PGM as a co-profile manager. You needn't feel that way, since you are a PGM project members - plus anyone who has the WikiTree pre1700 badge is free to make insignificant updates. If the change is to the Data, we certainly would suggest a comment here, and collaboration.

Thanks for all you do on WikiTree and within the PGM project. Keep up the good work!

You may need to check your marriage date for Rose and the death date: The update for the will - see link in bio - is the date of the marriage (which only says Matthew was married by that date) and the date the will was proven is the date of death.
