Caleb, also called David, was born in about 1848 in Warren County, Ohio, the son of James Whitacre and Elizabeth Fitz Randolph. His family moved to farm in Wabash township in Darke County in Ohio in the late 1840s, but returned to the Blanchester area in Clinton County by the late 1850s. Despite his youth, Caleb was able to serve in the Civil War as a private in the Co. A of the 146th Ohio Infantry for four months in 1864 and in Co. H of the 13th Ohio Cavalry for five months -- including the last month of the war -- in 1865. At age 19 in 1866, he married Delilah Jane Mahaffey in Clinton County. They lived initially in the Sabina area in Clinton County where Caleb worked as a farm hand. By 1880, they had moved to Springfield in Clark County, Ohio. Caleb worked in a machine shop and as a laborer. Delilah and Caleb had at least six children together. Delilah died in 1891. Caleb remarried in about 1896 to divorcee Mary Jane Maine née McAuslan, originally from Scotland. Mary had left Caleb in 1902 not long before he was killed accidentally by a train. He was 55 years old. Caleb is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio.

With portions of his body literally ground to a pulp, David Witacre [sic] of this city, an aged veteran of the civil war, was carried 30 feet by a Big Four engine early yesterday morning, and finally thrown an almost unrecognizable mass at the side of the track. Death was instantaneous. The fault was undoubtedly that of Whitacre as he had made his way over onto the tracks of the company and was engaged in filling a basket with coal at the time of occurrence. Freight engine number 525 had been backing up to fill an order to go to London for a cut of cars and the old man was not seen. The engine struck Whitacre about 60 feet east of Linden avenue, and he was dragged a considerable distance farther. The man's skull and stomach were crushed in, and his left foot was entirely severed from his body. The last person who saw Whitacre alive was Mrs. Maud Herrod, residing at 28 Linden avenue, who noticed the old man filling his basket with the coal that was scattered along the tack. She even saw him in front of the engine, but supposed he had stepped out of its path in time to escape injury. She knew nothing of his tragic death until her son, who had discovered the body, called to her. Coroner Bennett, who was summoned, removed the remains from the spot to his office, where they were prepared for burial. Engineer McCerty, who was in charge of the engine, when interviewed said that he did not even realize that he struck the man, and proceeded on to the Big Four depot, where he was to receive his orders, without stopping. Whitacre was slightly deaf and it is supposed that his fact probably caused his death. He has been married twice, the second time to the divorced wife of Jacob Main, who left him about two weeks ago, since which time has been living with his nephew, Edward Espy, on Harrison street.
Another child, Hazel who died at birth in 1888, is also listed in Ancestry.com family trees as a daughter of Caleb and Delilah, but no record was found to support the relationship. If evidence can be identified, a wikitree profile would need to be added for her.
