Biography

William The Conqueror in 1066 had England surveyed to determine how much property there was in England and who owned it. This survey became known as Doomsday Book. This book lists Sir Simon de Whitacre of Warwickshire as the land proprietor in Warwickshire. Many believe that this Sir Simon is the ancestor of the Whitakers of Holme and other Whitaker lines.

I'm not sure Edwinus (Simons father) was a Whitacre. Simon de Whitacre was the first known user of the surname, and he was originally Simon de Barcheston. He took the name de Whitacre after the Lord of Tamworth, Robert Marmion, gave him 1/2 a knights fee in the Manor of Whitacre.

Barcheston, after the Norman conquest had been divided, 2.5 hides with a mill being held under William fitz Corbucion by Johais, and 1 hide less 0.5 virgate being held of the King in Chief by Alvric. Johias, being Simon de Whitacres grandfather, would have been a Barcheston, as would have been his son, Edwinus.
