John Adam Whitaker was born in 1828 in Chery Valley, Otsego, NY, his father, Laurance, was 28 and his mother, Cornelia, was 24. He had three sons and two daughters with Eliza Jane Yarrington. He died on March 29, 1897, in Victory Township, Mason County Michigan, at age of 68, and was buried in South Victory Cemetary.
A good part of the original log cabin John built when he was 36 years old still exists incorporated into a modern home on North Amber Road by the south branch of the Lincoln River east of the Victory town hall. His father Laurance was 66 at this time and he helped on the construction a little although he passed away only two years later. By 1850 John Adam was only 22 and had migrated from Cherry Valley NY to Union County Ohio with his father and family. The combined families had farmed in York, Union County, Ohio for about 20 years prior to imigrating to Michigan. This area of Michigan was quite wild in 1866. They traveled by wagon, and bridges were lacking in many areas. They had to ford many of the rivers and streams, When the cabin was up and before there was a door installed they kept a campfire just outside, and someone on watch for the night to ensure the wolfs would not venture into the homestead. John Adams son J. Fremont was about 10 when the cabin was being built and would write articles in the 1920's and 1930's for the Ludington newspaper describing this time of local history and his experiences in the 1860's 70's and 80's so the family has captured a good accounting of the local Whitaker and area history[1].
