Mary Whitaker born October 22, 1840 in Fairview, Buncombe, North Carolina. On July 26, 1860 she married (1) William Alexander McBrayer. He was born on November 3, 1836, the son o William and Elizabeth (Fortune) McBrayer. Alec enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 8, 1862 in Asheville, North Carolina and became a sergeant in Company C 60th Regiment North Carolina Infantry (State Troops). He appeared on the Report of Casualties of Preston's Brigade in the Battle in front of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. On January 2, 1863 he was listed as being wounded "slightly on the hand." He was sent home on January 12, 1863, because of the seemingly small wound but blood poisoning set in and he died on January 17, 1863. Alec was buried in Cane Creek Cemetery, Fairview. Mary and Alec McBrayer had two children, but neither of them lived. Mary Whitaker McBrayer married (2), Millington Lytle, on November 15, 1871. He was a widower with grown children, who had been born on February 19, 1809, son of George and Ann (Clark) Lytle. Mary and "Milt" had four children before they separated. He died on November 9, 1899, aged 90 years and was buried in Sharon Cemetery, Fairview. Mary died February 17, 1931 at the age on 91.
