OBITUARY Pawtucket Times, Published 3/5/1909 "Gee Whitaker" Dead Hartford, Conn - March 5 - Few persons who by saying "Gee Whitaker" are aware how the ejaculation originated or that the man to whom it first applied lived in Ashford near Willmantic. George Whitaker who died in his home was a famous forty-niner, and a member of the police force of New Britain and became the first chief. He was a terror among the town inclined and was famlilary dubbed "G Whitaker Mr Whitaker, who died of apoplexy was 83 years old and a Civil War Veteran.

!3. "at Newark, California, Sept. 13 1858 Comments on the letters he has written and recived; gives and account upon his jobs and mining; mentions Morgan; expects to come home in 1860."

!4. "at Newark, California, to his folks at home, March 12 1859 Gives an account of the weather, the snow and his living conditions; and the mining; mentions Morgan, Horace and the Garitsons; would like some Connecticut paper sent to him."

"at Fort Craig, New Mexico, to the folks at home, Sept. 20 1863 Comments upon the letters he wrote home since in the service; gives an account of an Indian expedition his company was orded to in the mountins; they were sent to quell a riot among the Mexicans; comments upon the drinking in the army; mentions William, Edward and the death of Daniel; comments upon politics."
