Biography

Lorenzo was born in 1899. He was the son of George Whitaker and Julia Halford. He passed away in 1961.

Lorenzo Robert Whitaker, 62, owner and operator of Carolina Ceramics, o Rt 3, Columbia, died unexpectedly yesterday morning at the Columbia Hospital after having suffered a heart attack earlier at his office.

Mr Whitaker was born in Centenary, SC, a son of the late Julie Halford and the Rev G R Whitaker.

He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Emory University and his B.S. degree in Ceramic Engineering from North Carolina State University.

After graduation, he held the following positions: Superintendent of the Moland-Drysdale Corporation, Hendersonville, NC; Superintendent Shale Products Corporation, Oliver Springs, TN, and Ceramic Engineer with the Richland Shale Corporation of Columbia.

Mr Whitaker designed the Atlanta Brick and Tile Corporation of Atlanta, GA and the Chattachoochee Brick Company of Atlanta.

Mr Whitaker is listed in Who's Who in Engineering which lists among his many achievements the fact that he was co-designer of the Dryer-Combination, the Tunnel Kilne, the Roll Grinding System and the Double Roll Hammer Mill.

He contributed many articles to Technical Journals both in the United States and England.

Mr Whitaker was the author of two books related to his work: "Firing Clay Products" and "Drying Clay Products, Design and Correction of Ceramic Dyes."

Mr Whitaker was a member of Rehoboth Methodist Church, Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity; American Ceramic Society; International Ceramic Engineers; American Society of Professional Engineers; Keramos; and the Registered Professional Engineers of South Carolina.

Surviving: 2 daughters, Miss Virginia Whitaker of Columbia and Mrs W L Harrington, Jr of Waynesboro, VA; 3 sons, John M Whitaker, and Robert Whitaker both of Columbia and Dr Halford S Whitaker of Memphis, TN. 2 sisters, Mrs Imogene Jernigan of Little Rock, AR and Mrs Travis Jernigan, Davenport, FL
