Joseph was a naturalist who published several works. He lived most of his life at Rainworth Lodge, Rainworth, Nottinghamshire ^{[4] [5] [6] [7]} where his home resembled a museum due to the many specimens he had collected. He was also a justice of the peace.

He passed away in 1932. ^[8]
