OBITUARY "MRS. MARY BRUCE. An old identity of the Tweed, in the person of Mrs. Mary Bruce of Ewing Street Murwillumbah, passed away on Tuesday last at the age of 87 years. Born in the Taree district, she came to the Tweed with her husband, the late Mr Edward Bruce about 65 years ago - that would be in the late "Seventies." They lived first at Tumbulgum, where they engaged in cane growing. Condong and Cudgon were other places of residence before they finally moved to Murwillumbah. Besides farming pursuits, Mr. Bruce was one of the mail contractors of the district, and at various times ran the mail to Brunswick Heads, to Uki, and over the Nightcap Range to Woodlawn on the Richmond, and to Tyalgum. Mr. Bruce pre-deceased his wife by 35 years. The late Mrs. Bruce possessed that greatness of heart and readiness to help others in distress which seems to have been one of the outstanding attributes of our pioneer women. A member of the Red Cross until she died, she was a good worker for the organization and for the War Chest during the Great War of 1914-18. Throughout her life, she had actively associated herself with the work of her church. She leaves a family of four sons, three daughters, and one adopted daughter. The sons are Messrs Fredrick Charles Bruce (NZ) Edward Joseph Bruce (Maclean) Henry Theodore Bruce (Grafton) and William Berkley Bruce (Caboolture. Q.). The daughters are Mesdames S. Skinner (Murwillumbah), and A. E. Clancy (Byron Bay). and H. Reynolds (Roselle, Sydney). The adopted daughter is Mrs. E. Okeefe The funeral will take place in the Old Cemetery, Church Hill, Murwillumbah, today following a service at 11 am in All Saints Church of England."
