Biography

Caleb was born 7 July 1747 in Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Josiah White and Mary Taylor.[1] He passed away after 19 November 1787 In Worcester County, Massachusetts.[2] (Or possibly after 2 March 1805 in Cheshire County, New Hampshire.)

Caleb is named in the will of his father, Josiah White, dated 26 August 1761. He was bequeathed "all land, stock of cattle, tools, featherbed and the chest that was his Grand Father Taylor's…" The will was filed for probate 13 August 1764, probate granted 27 August 1764. One proviso in the will was that Caleb and his sister Mary were to "take care of and comfortably maintain both in sickness & health my son Josiah White 3d… (a person non compos mentis)…." On 19 November 1787 Thomas Parker, now husband of Mary White, asked for a Guardian to be appointed for Josiah White 3d since "Caleb White has disposed of his estate given him in sd will and has removed out of the state;…"[3] (Note land sale below on 2 January 1787, which is probably the sale referred to by Thomas Parker.)

Caleb married Rebeckah Marsh on 26 February 1767 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts.[4] They had children:

  1. Sally White, b 24 May 1768, Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts[5]
  2. Chloe White, b 23 September 1771, Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts[6]

Caleb sold land:

Caleb White of Sutton MA to Micah Thayer of same. (Worcester Co. Deeds 101:266)… 2 Jan 1787, Caleb White, for £210 silver money sold to Micah Thayer, yeoman… sixty & three quarter acres in Sutton… Witnesses: Peter Marsh, Andrew Marsh, Rebekah White. Ack. same day by Caleb. Rec. 4 Jan. 1787 "at 38 minutes past two o'clock A. M."[3]

Based on Caleb's sale of his land on 2 January 1787 and the petition of his brother-in-law Thomas Parker on 19 November 1787 (see above), it appears as if Caleb left the state in 1787. Is there any information as to where he might have gone? We might find a clue in Caleb's purchase of land in New Hampshire on 31 October 1786.

Zacheus Bebee of Marlow NH to Caleb White of Sutton MA. (Cheshire Co. NH Deeds 38:454)… 31 Oct. 1786, Zacheus Bebee, yeoman, for £60 sold to Caleb White, yeoman… 52 acres in Marlow…. Witnesses: Joseph Brown, Silas Mack, Benjamin Brown. Ack 4 Nov. 1786 by Zacheus. Rec. 15 Nov. 1786.[3]

Following this purchase of land in New Hampshire, the records show sales of small amounts of land from Caleb White "of Marlow NH" to various persons between 1795 and 1805. If this is the same Caleb from Sutton, Massachusetts, he would be 58 years old and his death date could probably be moved to after 2 March 1805, the date the last sale was recorded.[3]

Caleb White is living in Marlow, Cheshire, New Hampshire on the 1790 census. In his household are himself, three males under the age of 16 and one female.[7]

Caleb was born in 1747. He passed away in 1830.

Son of Josiah White and Mary Taylor. Spouse to Rebecka Marsh (1st) and Lucy Howard (2nd). Father to Sally, Chloe, Caleb, Dexter, and Hosea
