Her household consisted of the following:
In 1830, Jane Norton filed a petition with the courts in Lawrence County, Alabama claiming that her husband had abandoned her five years prior. She testified that she had married John Norton about 17 years ago (approximately 1813) in the state of Tennessee. John made occasional visits before totally abandoning his wife and six children. She was being supported by the charity of her "benevolent father". She believes that John was being held in jail in Natchez, Mississippi on a charge of a felony[2]
Jane's ex-husband John Norton died before 2 Nov. 1835, when his minor heirs (over the age of 14 years), James and John, petitioned the court to allow William Norton (their brother) to be their guardian. William Norton was also appointed guardian of the infant heirs under 14 years of age, Rachel and Thadeus. William Dollar (Jane's son-in-law) was one of the sureties on the bond. [3]
In 1850, Jane (age 52) was living with her second husband John A. Jones. They were living in Crawford County, Missouri. In their household were the following children: E.R. Jones, R.B. Jones, E. Norton, F. Norton, and A. Norton. The family lived next to Jane's son-in-law, William Dollar. [4]
