LIEUTENANT JOHN WHITE"Followed the trade of a carpenter." He was a commissioned Lieutenant and was associated with Col. Joseph Buckminister, Jr. during the French and Indian Wars. In 1748 he removed with his family to Leicester, he was chosen, 5-14-1754, as Sealer of Weights and Measures and the following year Assessor and Selectman. He was at one time a slave holder. m: 7-24-1728, Sybilla Buckminister, dau. of Col. Joseph Buckminister, Sr. of Framingham. Their daughter, Sarah White, married Joseph Bemis, their child was Amasa Bemis, Revolutionary Soldier. From "Colonial Families of the United States", p. 475,476,477From Notes of Edward Kingsbury: He was one of "The Committee of Three" cosen at Parish meeting asking to be incorporated as a town-- the application, at last, was successful. The town was previous to this act the 2nd precinct of Leicester.p. 131, "History of Spencer", by Draper: "John White, Sr., had a female slave named Zilpah. By a sham marriage, Zilpah and Sloane, [servant of John Elliot, Esq] were allowed to cohabit together." Interestingly enough, the term "slave" is seldom usd in the records; the word "servant" is used instead.Will of John White [docket 64333 Book 15, p. 304] Worcester Co., MA. The month of baptism listed in the Charlestown church record is the 6th month, which in the old style calendar would be August and not June. (Unless for some reason the Charlestown church records are unusual for the time?).
