Biography

John Warren White, the son of Thomas Warren White and Elizabeth Persse, was born on 5 January 1828 at Caherblonick, County Clare, Ireland.

Flag of Ireland
John White Sr. migrated from Ireland to Victoria.
Flag of Victoria
Choosing an army career as a young man, John was commissioned as an officer of the Rifle Brigade, in which he served in Canada. He resigned his commission and departed for Australia aboard the Lightning, arriving in the fast developing Colony of Victoria in 1850. His sister, Maria Lucinda, and her husband, Francis Beggs, had already emigrated to the Colony of Victoria in 1849 where gold was soon to be discovered.
The original Eureka Flag.
John White Sr. was involved in events associated with the Eureka Rebellion at Ballarat.

John soon found himself travelling to Ballarat with elements of the 40th Regiment to help quell trouble with miners incensed about unfair licencing. On Sunday, 3rd December 1854, the military and police made a surprise attack on the miners who were barricaded in the Eureka Stockade, which resulted in the deaths of thirty defenders and the removal of the Southern Cross flag. John White’s exact role in this attack is unknown but in view of his military background it is likely that he took an active part in the attack on the stockade.

After leaving the army once more, he worked for his brother-in-law at Eurambeen, Victoria, learning agricultural skills. It was at Eurambeen that he met Maria (Mysie) Gibton, daughter of Robert Nassau Gibton of Tallaght, County Dublin, who with her family arrived in Melbourne on the Afric in 1857. Mysie's parents had both died. Her uncle had married Adelaide White, a sister of John's and Maria's. It was through this family connection in Ireland that Mysie had secured the position of governess to the Beggs family, first in Geelong and later at Eurambeen.

John and Mysie were married on 13th June 1860 in St Stephen’s Church of England (Anglican Church), Richmond, Victoria.[1]
MARRIAGES.
WHITE—GIBTON.— On the 13th inst., at St. Stephen's Church, Richmond, by the Rev. Charles Perks, John Warren, eldest son of Thomas Warren White, Esq., of Cahirblonig, in the county of Clare, to Maria, youngest daughter of the late Robert Nassau Gibton, Esq., of Dublin.[2]

John became occupied in buying and selling of sheep and other properties. At one time he owned a flour mill. They moved around various country towns before settling in St Arnaud, 110 kilometres northwest of Ballarat. John was for a time mayor of St Arnaud. John and Maria had eight children, all born in Victoria, one of whom died in infancy:

In 1881, John took his family to Queensland where he was interested in pastoral property. They lived in the Gympie, Charters Towers and Gladstone districts with varying fortunes, before departing the rural scene for the 'lights' of Brisbane; buying a home in the northern suburb of Clayfield. When the Stock Exchange was inaugurated in Brisbane in 1885, John became its first president.

John Warren White died on 9 January 1918 at home in The Bungalow, Franz Road, Clayfield, Queensland, having attained his ninetieth birthday four days prior.[3]

White-66088 and White-22315 appear to represent the same person because: John Warren White was associated with the 40th regiment of foot and with the events at Eureka - the second John White profile is of the same man
White-66088 and White-22315 do not represent the same person because: On second thoughts the John White with no dates was a trooper with the police not the 40th regiment so a different man
Would appreciate contact if you have information of the 'Lightning' sailing mentioned in this biography, please.

Hi Jenny,

If you require info on the famous clipper 'Lightning'; then the news article may have gotten their dates wrong. See these links https://www.shippingwondersoftheworld.com/lightning.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_(clipper)
