Biography

Ruth Ann White was born in 1837 in Jefferson, Tennessee to Pleasant White and Elizabeth Newell. In 1850, at age 13 Ruth Ann lives with her mother and father and 6 siblings in District 13, Jefferson, Tennessee. She is their oldest child and attends school[1].

March 11, 1858 Ruth Ann married Noah Taylor in Coles, Illinois[2]. In 1860 they were living in South Okaw, Coles, Illinois will 2 of Noah's children from his previous marriages, John and Sarah, and Noah and Ruth Ann's children, Samuel and Margaret[3]. They lived in Illinois for about 8 years. Five of their children were born in Illinois, then sometime between 1866 when their fifth child William was born and the 1870 census they moved from Illinois to Kansas where 8 more children were born.

In 1870, in Fall River, Greenwood, Kansas, Noah is a farmer and Ruth Ann is keeping house. Noah's son John has married and is living elsewhere in Greenwood, Kansas. the rest of the children there are Sarah (Noah and Evelina's daughter), Samuel, Margaret, James J., Nancy E. (Elizabeth), William F., and Noah H[4]. In 1875 the family lives in Salt Springs, Greenwood, Kansas. Son Noah who would have been 8 years old is no longer there so may have died. Added to the family are Eph, Alice and Mary Bell[5]. Five years later in 1880 the family is still in Salt Springs, Greenwood, Kansas. Some of the children have left home and more have been born. The household's children now consist of Elizabeth, age 17, William, 16, Ephram, 19, Alice, 8, Silva, 6, Thomas, 3, and Jane, 1. Mary Bell is no longer there[6].

In about 1882 the family left Kansas and traveled to Washington State and Ruth's husband Noah died in Elma Washington in 1893[7].

Now widowed, Ruth Ann is living with her son, William, his wife Dessie and 2 grand daughters, Leona and Leora, in 1900. In this census she appears as Rosa A. They live in Grays Harbor, Washington (now Chehalis). It says she is 66 years old, born in Nov 1834 in Tennessee, is widowed, married 45 years, has 10 living children. Both Ruth Ann and son William are listed as farmers[8]. In 1910 Ruth Ann, referred to as Nora in this census, her son Ephram, age 40, lives with her along with her grand daughter, Florence, age 12[9]. Ruth Ann became the guardian of Florence in 1905 after the death of her daughter Jane Oliver in 1904[10].

About a month after signing Florence's affidavit for marriage, Ruth Ann died on April 13, 1915 in Elma, Washington[11].

Research Notes

Interestingly, Ruth Ann goes by different names in some of the census's. In 1875, she is identified as Lucy A. and in 1880 she is Nancy. In 1900 she is Rosa and in 1910, she is Nora.

Also daughter Mary Bell, born about 1873 or 1874 shows up in the 1875 census and no where else. Her sister Silvia also born in 1874 is not there in 1875 but is in the 1880 census. This leads me to believe that they may be the same person. Also her obituary says that Ruth Ann was the mother of 12 children, not 13[12].
