Biography

Some family trees have Mabel's name as Mabel Boardman White. On the basis of this (unproven) middle name, Mabel has been identified as the daughter of John White and Elizabeth Boardman. John and Elizabeth were married October 21, 1736 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.[1] Mabel White 'd. Jno. & Elizabeth b. Dec 29, 1755' appears in the same record.[2] She would probably have been their youngest child.

Evidence of Baptismal Record and Birth Year

There is, however, a baptismal record for Mabel White in Cromwell, Connecticut dated 29 Dec 1754.[3] Thus her actual birth date remains unclear.

She married Elisha Tryon in 1784.[4] See below. There is a marriage also recorded in the church records for Cromwell, Middlesex, Connecticut (where the White family seems to have lived and are largely buried) with the date of February 2, 1784, and it has the groom's name as Elisha Tryon.[5]

Research supporting Mabel White as first wife

Mabel Boardman White died, aged 49, on August 22, 1804, giving a birth year of about 1755, which accords with both the birth record in Middletown and the baptismal record in Cromwell, though both differ by a year.[6] She is buried in Old Farm Hill Cemetery, in a grave next to Elisha Tryon. However, the record of the marriage of Mabel White on February 3, 1784 gives the husband's name as Elihu Tryon, which has led to uncertainty.[7] This could be a mis-transcription of Elihu for Elisha. One document in the file of probate papers for Elisha's estate refers to him as Elihu Tryon. A second marriage record that appears in the Cromwell Church Records has the marriage as between Mabel and Elisha Tryon. A son, Eleazer, was born to Elisha and Mabel April 7, 1791.[8] A son Leonard was born in Middletown June 27, 1799.[9] A daughter, also named Mabel, was born in Middletown December 26, 1784.[10] A daughter Nancy was born in Middletown December 20, 1786.[11] Thus it is clear Elisha was married to a woman named Mabel and had five children with her. The youngest son of Elisha and Elisha's second wife Phebe, Reuben, married a Mercy Boardman, who may have been a relative of Elisha's first wife Mabel.
