Family Information
Samuel White was a farmer and raised stock. He moved to Orangeville, Pennsylvania, from Columbia county, Pennsylvania, in 1830 and continued to farm there until 1836 when he decided to move to Richland County, Ohio. He along with his two brothers, John and Peter, traveled with their families in covered wagons going through Pittsburgh and over the mountains. After six weeks, they arrived in Mansfield, Ohio. Later they settled in Cass Township. He originally purchased 40 acres in Richland County; later he acquired more to where he had a total of 186 acres. He was a member and served as one of the officers in the United Brethern church. Wheat was $2.50, oats were $1.00 and potatoes were $1.25. In the ante-bellum days, Samuel was strongly opposed to slavery.[3]
