Biography

Erskine Norman White was born on May 31, 1833, in New York City, New York; the third child and eldest son of Norman White and Mary Abiah Dodge.[1][2]

He graduated Yale College in 1854, and Union Theological Seminary in 1857.[1][2]

He was ordained by the New York Classis of the Reformed Dutch Church of the United States on June 9, 1859.[1]

On May 24, 1859, he married Eliza Tracy Nelson, the daughter of John G. and Eunice (Ripley) Nelson of New York, at the Madison Square Presbyterian Church in New York City. The ceremony was presided over by the Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Skinner.

The couple had six children:[1]

  1. Nelson Ripley White, born December 12, 1860; died unmarried, September 19, 1880 at age 19.
  2. Stanley White, born May 2, 1862.
  3. Edith Norman White, born May 9, 1864.
  4. Helen Wellesley White, born February 28, 1867.
  5. Cleveland White, born August 15, 1872; died as an infant, September 25, 1872.
  6. Howard Erskine White, born September 27, 1874.

During the summer of 1862, he was chaplain with the Twenty-second Regiment of New York at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, while they were on guard duty there for three months.[1]

He was pastor of:[1]

  • The Reformed Dutch Church at Richmond, Staten Island, from June, 1859 to November, 1862.
  • The Presbyterian Church in New Rochelle, New York, from November, 1862 to August, 1868.
  • Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, New York, from October, 1868 to November, 1874.
  • West Twenty-third Street Presbyterian Church in New York City until 1886.

His wife, Eliza, died in 1894 when he was 61 years old.[1]

He authored a number of articles, reviews and sermons including a book on his ancestry, Norman White - His Ancestors And His Descendants.[1]

He was a Director of Union Theological Seminary. Author of The Personal Influence of Abraham Lincoln, 1865. His uncle was William Earl Dodge.[2]

Rev. Erskine Norman White died in New York City on February 13, 1911, at the age of 77. He was buried in the White Family Lot at Woodlawn Cemetery, The Bronx, New York.[2]
