Early Life

David White was born, February 6, 1771, the son of David White and Margaret Gill of Albany, New York Colony.[1] His father was a Loyalist and they were picked up by the HMS Clinton at East River, New York on 14 Nov 1783 and delivered to Port Roseway, Nova Scotia on 13 Dec 1783. [2][3]

Occupation

He was a cooper.[1]

Family

On 17 July 1808, he married Mary Hurlburt,[4] the daughter of Titus and Sarah Leonard Hurlburt of Tusket Forks, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia.[5] [6]

  • The date of their, marriage and Mary's death death come from family sources, no clear sources are provided, so accuracy has not been confirmed, however the other information provided from the two example references provided is consistent with confirmed information for other family members[7] [8]
  • These records also show children, including:
  1. William White 1809–1809[4]
  2. Margaret White 1810–1909,[9][4] who married Jacob Norman Tinkham
  3. Mary Jane White 1812–[4]
  4. John White 1815–1833[4]
  5. Elizabeth Phoebe White 1817–1901[4][10]
  6. William White 1813–1916[4][11][12], who married Zilpha Ann Hurlburt [5][6]
  7. Hezekiah White 1818–1892[4]
  8. David White 1820–1842[4]
  9. Jane White 1821–[4]
  10. Deborah White 1822–1914,[4] who married George Hurlburt, son of Israel[5] [6]

Mary died circa 1822.

In about 1827, David married his second wife, Eleanor "Nellie" Van Emburg, (born about 1793, died about 1876), and had children, including:

  1. Richard White 1828–1909, who married Sophia Jane Hurlburt, daughter of John and Mary Andrews Hurlburt, and who died in 1909[13]
  2. Isaac White 1839–1910, who married Eunice Cavanagh and then Delight Cavanagh Goudy[14], both daughters of Simon and Sarah Hurlburt Cavanugh
  3. Franklyn White 1850–1937, who married Mary Jane Cavanagh, daughter of daughter of John and Mary Andrews Hurlburt

Residence

  • The 1861 Census shows David in Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia Canada[15]
  • The 1871 Census shows David and Eleanor in Plymouth, Yarmouth County[16]

Death

Research Notes

Unclear if children get loyalist status but I have placed a sticker. Will need to research further. If David's parents married in 1776, then he was either younger than his reported birth date of 1771 on his death certificate or he is a child of Margaret's previous husband. His father also could have been previously married. They also could have had children before marriage.
