Lura was born in 1839. She is the daughter of Mark White and Rachel Walker.

Educated in the village schools, she began teaching at the age of eighteen, which she followed for about five years, when the failling health of her mother confining her to her home, which had been increased by the four orphan children of her brother Levi, she, in connection with her brother Lucius, cared for them all until they could care for themselves. She married March 5th 1856, Matthew Hale, son of Emmanuel and Phoebe Beardsley of Clymer NY, but still remained with her brother on the homestead or on their own farm nearby.
