Although he did not actively serve as a member of the military, John is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for his Civil Service and his Patriotic Service for furnishing supplies for the Continental Army. [1] [2] [3] John's wife was Mary Johnston. Application for membership in the Society have been made by the descendants of his daughter, Susanna, who married Cuthbert Williamson. Researcher's Notes

In 1757, Cumberland Parish was divided to create Cornwall Parish, which encompassed the area that would become Charlotte County. As a result of this growth and the construction of the magazine, a community began to develop. In 1759, the House of Burgesses authorized Clement Read and John Pleasant to lay off 100 acres they owned around the magazine into streets and lots and to establish the town of Dalstonburgh (Hutcheson, 1928: 7). As settlement continued, a petition was unsuccessfully filed in 1762 to divide Lunenburg County into three counties. In November 1764, the petition was accepted and Lunenburg County was divided to create the counties of Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Charlotte County. Clement Read constructed a frame courthouse and the first court was held on March 4, 1765. Many of the early settlers in the area participated in the first county government, including: Samuel Cobb as clerk; James Hunt, Thomas Bedford, David Caldwell, Elisha White, Thomas Spencer, John White and Joseph Morton as justices; and, Thomas Read as sheriff and surveyor (Ailsworth et al, 60). Business of the court included: the construction of a jail; setting of fees for ordinary, ferries, and mill licenses; licensing ministers to perform marriages; registering free negroes; registering earmarks of livestock; and the construction and improvements of roads (Ailsworth et al, 65-66). DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

White-72562 and White-35378 are not ready to be merged because: Thank you Crystal for making contact and suggesting the merge. My concerns about merging the two profiles involves the women in John White-35378's life.

John White-35378 has mother Katherine Brain. Katherine Brain was the widow of Mr. John White-6900 of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County VA who married Robert Brain after Mr. John White-6900's death in 1744 (per parish records). Mr. John White-6900 and unknown first wife were the grandparents of John White-72562.

John White-35378 has a wife named Mary Johnston. What is the documentation for the last name of Johnston for Mary. The will of William Johnston (Charlotte County, Virginia will book 1, p 127) mentions a Mary White as his daughter. Some, including Malcolm Elmore Walthall in "The Walthall Family, a Genealogical History of the Descendants of William Walthall of Virginia", pp 74 & A-4 use this as evidence that this was Mary, wife of John White. I find no evidence to substantiate this.Conversly, I find that Mary, daughter of William Johnston, was more likely to have been the wife of James White, no known relation. I have not found William Johnston mentioned with John White or his family in Charlotte court records. However, in Charlotte order book 3, p 109 (7-6-1772) William Johnson made himself a party to damages that were charged against James White by Buchanan, Hartie and Company. James White and William Johnson were both witnesses for Caleb Johnson in a suit against Landrum Butler as reported ibid., p 192 (11-2-1772). Even stronger evidence is in order book 4, p 197 (10-4-1779). Here, after the death of William, there is an indenture between James White, Mary White, and James Johnson (son and executor of Wm Johnson) on the one part and Robert Smith on the other part.

Please feel free to email me at [email address removed] and I'd be happy to share all that I have on John White-72562.

Jan: This comment is a response to your email on 9/14/21. You are correct. You did not post an excerpt of Deborah Park's blog on this Profile. You posted it on Profile Nos. White-63995 and Unknown-552519, and you added this John White (White-35378) as their son. Or, I think that's what you did; I'm having some trouble sorting out the many changes.

I posted my comment here as an explanation in response to your criticism below about my giving your email to Deborah Parks. It is apparent that there are many conflicts regarding the colonial John Whites in Virginia. It is my opinion that someone else needs to resolve these conflicts.

Although I sent the documentation to the profile manager, Katherine Benbow, at your request I have posted both the will of William Johnston d. 1775 and the 1779 deed where Mary, her husband James, and Mary's brother James sold some of their inherited property. I would have uploaded these documents to their profiles on Wikitree if they had profiles yet.

Jan: I apologize for providing an additional comment, but I realized that I have a copy of the Deed that shows Mary White and her husband James White and James Johnston sold 85 acres of land adjacent to Samuel Johnston in 1779. This land must have been the 85 acres of land that was adjacent to Samuel Johnston that she received from her father William Johnston/Johnson in 1775. I sent you the DAR document of the Will of William Johnston, which referenced his daughter, Mary White, but did not name his son-in-law. That was the only evidence presented to the DAR to establish that Mary White was the wife of John White. Now, based on the Will and the Deed, the assumption that Mary Johnston married John White was wrong. Instead, she married James White, who also lived in Charlotte Co. As I told you previously, Claudette Hark, one of the DAR members, who listed Mary Johnston as the wife of John White in her DAR application, told me in the last 2 years that Mary Price married John White. The extensive 2000 White Tree also lists Mary Price as his wife.

Jan: as shown on the DAR documents that I sent you yesterday, the Ancestor No is A 125157--the same number you referenced. I reviewed the 30 pages that pertained to each Member listed in the database, and the 6 pages that I sent were the only documents about John White. The other pages pertained to their descendants.

I am sorry that I provided your email to the person whose blog you excerpted and posted on Wikitree. She happens to descend down your same line and has done extensive research on that family, She offered to help with your research because I have been injured, and I am in pain. I also am sorry that I went to DAR yesterday to research the DAR records used for this Ancestor after I left the nearby doctor's office. I will not provide addition documentation to you. I have received many messages from you btw 3-5 am. Unfortunately, I have been awake then because I have been unable to sleep. I do not know where you live, so I cannot time messages to match your time zone. Liz

You say, "blog you excerpted." I did not add anything from an excerpted blog to this profile. I only edited an existing biography to include the information from the DAR page, and provided you a link to it below.

Hello Janne:

Most likely this John White was a son or a cousin of John White, dec 1758, who was my direct descendant. The Hanover Co Project at familytreedna.com would be delighted to find a direct male descendant (still named White) for DNA testing, so they could sort out the relationship.

I have an extensive. substantially documented tree for this family (White-35389) that was created by direct descendants, which I got from the DAR library. It's 40+ pages. I also communicated with one of the primary contributors, and she said his wife Mary was a Price. The author and another contributor Jack White (who provided the erroneous 1758 death date for John White, dec. 1744, based on the 1758 signature date of the Devise) have died. I assume you can send me a private message, and that will give me your email, so I can email you this Tree. The author lists John White, dec. 1744, as this John White's father, through Katharine Barrett White Braine, but I do not see specific documentation, except a return of John White referencing the land associated with the Devise related to the John White dec. 1744 Estate. The problem is they apparently were unaware of the Confession of Faith record for John White, dec., 1758. The bigger problem is that there were several John Whites in Virginia, and the relationships haven't been adequately determined. At this stage, I think DNA testing is the best solution for resolution. The Williamson descendants referenced in the DAR application for White-35378 are listed in the Tree. I have not looked at the application to determine if they have a marriage certificate for John White and Mary. I have not see one.

Are you a descendant of one of these John Whites, or are you trying to clean up the Wikitree John White mess?

Elizabeth, I replied to you via email, which you shared with another person and I have been bombarded with material, of which none of it appears to answer the question that I asked you below. What is the DAR Ancestor of the Ancestor to which you refer? You say you received the material from the DAR and I would like to determine which John White you are referring to and look at the DAR records online. Thank you, and please do not share my email address with anyone else. jan

There is an extensive tree created by several heirs of John White and his wife Mary Price White, which includes extensive references. I got it from the DAR.

Most likely I am descended from a brother of this John White; however, we need to confirm this with DNA testing. Elizabeth Edmonds

According to DAR records, this John White married Mary Johnston: https://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A125157

There are more than a dozen John Whites in the DAR records. Do you have the DAR # for your DAR Ancestor?

posted by Janne (Shoults) Gorman
All approved lineages by DAR are always subject to further review as new evidence becomes available. It would appear that it was assumed that the Mary White listed in the 1775 will of William Johnston of Charlotte Co VA referred to Mary White, wife of John White of Charlotte County VA. On the contrary, per administration of William Johnston's estate, Mary White was the wife of James White. I'm happy to share both William Johnston's will and the deed/administration of his estate which lists James White as the husband of Mary Johnston White. But not sure this is the right profile to do so. Please advise.

The Mary Johnston who is attached as spouse of this John White does not have any parents. I have not found on WikiTree any William Johnston Johnston, who died in 1775, in Charlotte county, Virginia. It would be helpful if you entered your documentation on profiles for Mary Johnston and James White. Do you have any dates of birth for any of the persons referred to in this comment?
