Biography

Robert was born in 1805. [1][2] He came to the United States with his parents, brothers, and sisters in 1827.[3]The family lived in Anderson County, South Carolina for several years before moving west to Georgia.[4]Family tradition tells us that that the Whites were Presbyterian linen weavers who came to the United States in search of both religious freedom and commercial opportunities denied to non-Anglicans by the British government in Ireland.

Robert married Mary Cobb on 21 Mar 1831 in Anderson County, South Carolina.[5] Robert, Mary, and their children moved to Georgia circa 1838, settling initially in Clarke County, near his brother John.[6]By 1850, Robert had moved to Jackson County, Georgia, where he operated a textile mill.[7]In 1854, he was a charter member of Rockwell Masonic Lodge near Winder, Georgia.[8] In 1855 and 1856, he represented Jackson County in the state Senate. [9] On 17 Jul 1861, he was mustered into service and elected 1st Lieutenant of Company B, 16th Georgia Infantry. In November, 1861, he is listed on a Regimental Return at Camp Bryan. In December, 1861, he was stationed at Camp Lamar. In February, 1862 he was absent on a 25 day furlough. He resigned his commission on 4 April 1862. A letter in the file says that General Howell Cobb approved the resignation, saying that "Lieut. White is an old man & has served well & faithfully."[10]

He represented the 33rd District in the Georgia State Senate from 1863 through 1865. In the session beginning in 1863 he served on the standing committees dealing with the Lunatic Asylum, new counties and county lines, Engrossing, and Finance. [11][12][13]

In April, 1881 Robert and Mary White celebrated celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The celebration included 75 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.[14]

He died at the home of his son-in-law, L.Y. Bradbury, in Jefferson, Georgia on 17 Jan 1898. [15][16]
