Biography

Reuben White settled in the Republic of Texas before February 19, 1846.

Reuben White, a member of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, was born about 1795 to parents William and Amy (Comstock) White in La Louisiane française, New France (today what is known as Vermilion Parish, Louisiana).[1] During the War of 1812, White served in Capt. Shadrack Porter's Company, Baker's Regiment, of the Louisiana Militia.[1]

White married Christina Faulk on June 15, 1818[2], and together had at least eight children. White moved to Texas in 1824 from St Martin, Louisiana[3], as a member of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, with his widowed mother. White received a grant of one league on the east bank of the San Jacinto River on 19 Aug 1824 (the area now known as Barrett Station, across from his mother's existing league on the west bank of the river, which was granted 16 Aug 1824.[1][4]

White was listed with his family in the Atascosito Census in 1826 as a farmer and stock raiser. White's taxable property (after considerable exemptions) was 2,214 acres of land, two pleasure horses, 150 cattle, and one clock. He was a successful farmer-rancher of the period. Reuben White died before October 1848, as proven by a probate court record of his estate in Harris County in 1848.[1]

The property where Reuben is buried was formally set aside as the White Cemetery in 1850 and eventually became a community graveyard which includes many of the area pioneers and their descendants, including veterans from the Texas Revolution. Although Reuben's burial is the earliest recorded (1848) on what is today called Sterling-White Cemetery, it is believed that older gravesites may exist. A Texas State Historical Marker erected in his honor stands at the entrance of the cemetery.

Note: Unmarked Grave. Although Reuben White's exact grave location has been lost, he is likely buried in the lawn crypts on the far Southwest corner of the property, as this site contains the oldest graves and the still-standing tombstone of his youngest brother William.
