Biography

Janet was born about 1802, at Whitburn, West Lothian.[1][2] She was the daughter of Peter White, a grocer, and Janet Kay.[3]

She married Peter Watt in the parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire about 2/1/1831.[4][5]

They had at least 5 children who were all born at Shotts: William (1834), Peter White (1836), Janet Kay (1838), James (1840), and John White (1843).[6]

In 1841 Peter (40) and Janet (35) were living at Balbackie, in the parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire, along with their children Peter (5), Janet (2) and James (6mths). Peter's occupation was listed as Mason. [7] Balbackie was described as "A small farm house and offices the property of Halket Inglis Esqr. of Crammond". Peter Watt as the occupier.[8]

In 1851, Peter (51) & Janet (48) were living at Balbackie, Peter's occupation described as Mason. Also present were Janet Watt (25) born Whitburn, house servant (recorded as a daughter but it seems unlikely), Janet K. (12), John (7), and James (10) all attending school, and Susan Brown (17) house servant born Whitburn.[1]

In 1861, Peter (61) & Janet (59) still lived at Balbackie, occupation listed as Stone Mason.[2]

After Peter's death in 1867 at Balbackie, Janet (69) was listed in 1871, living at Balbackie Cottage, along with her son William.[9]

She died at Harthill, in the parish of Shotts, on the 17th of June, 1874, at the home of her son James Watt.[3]
