Anne was born on June 27, 1895. She was the daughter of Thomas John White and Julia Cecelia Brennan.[1] Anne is listed in her father's household in Newark, Ohio for the 1900 Census[2] and 1910 Census.[3]
On February 15, 1917, Anne married Frank Mathews Jr.[4] Together they had 11 children.
After the birth of their first child, the couple moved from Ohio to Northwest Indiana. Anne is listed with her husband and two children living in Hammond, Indiana on the 1920 Census.[5] The family moved to Calumet Township in Lake County, Indiana. In the 1930 Census, Anne is listed with her husband and 8 children.[6] She is listed with her husband and all 11 children in the 1940 Census.[7]
Anne passed away on July 4, 1951. She was interred at Calumet Park Cemetery[8].
Family Life
Two of Anne's three sisters became nuns. Below is a photo of the four sisters taken about 1907.
The White Sisters
From left to right are: Helen (Sister Annette), Honora "Dora" (Sister Pascal), Anne and Mary.
By the time the Great Depression began, Anne had already given birth to 8 children. She had another 3 children during this era. She was only age 36 when her eleventh child was born. While it was a difficult time, as a chemist, her husband had employment.
Her ninth child, Martha Jeanne, contracted encephalitis. Anne ran several times on the Democratic ticket for state representative and state senator. Feeling that her daughter's disease was caused by arsenic-lead poisoning from the work her husband performed, Anne campaigned for occupational disease legislation which was passed by the Indiana General Assembly in 1940.[9]
Her obituary published in the July 6, 1951 Hammond Times noted that she passed away at home. It notes she was a member of the Griffith Altar and Rosary Society.
