Hi Stokes,

Thanks for contributing on WikiTree. We really appreciate your help!

I noticed today that you did a merge of a profile into the Last Name at Birth Ritchie Ritchey - Daniel Milas Ritchie Ritchey (1832-1896), ie trying to add two options for the Last Name at Birth to the field. When it's not clear which is the preferred Last Name at Birth, please make sure that you look for a source to help you make a decision. The LNAB should be what is found on the sources (particularly the baptism or the birth record. Other spellings can be placed in the Other Last Names field. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Name_Fields . If you aren't sure which is the better option, please consult with the profile managers, or leave the merge to be completed by someone who has experience with that area of research.

Kind regards Gillian

Hi Stokes!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!

It’s very important to read and understand https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many WikiTree members, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Best wishes for your research

Hi Stokes

As you have been a member of WikiTree for a while now, I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.

Has the New Member How-To been helpful, or left you with any questions?

PS, Did you know that we have some interesting projects here at WikiTree, many project pages have links to reliable sources. To find projects hover your mouse over the little menu bar at the very top right of your screen over the word "Find", lower your mouse down the dropdown list that appears and click on "projects". When you find a project that you'd like to learn more about click on its clickable heading and you will be taken to the projects page where you can read all about it.

Pam, a question - on the Edit Profile page associated with the dates are "radio" or "option" button that allows me to note the date as estimated, exact, before or after, etc. Initially, none of them are selected. Sometimes when I'm moving the cursor around over the page, I inadvertently click-on or select one of these options. How do I deselect it? Once entered, it can't be removed. I could go to a different page without saving my changes or I could select the option that is most appropriate, but I'd really like to deselect it. Some web sites allow click to select and click again to deselect, but not this one. Any suggestions? Thanks, Stokes

Hi Stokes,

This one has pickled me before too so I took the question to my gang of friends and I'm told that sadly there is no way to deselect the radio dial options once clicked, but, like you mentioned here where you close without saving ...before closing the page you can open it again in a new tab, then copy and paste your edits into the new tab, then close the first one without saving...continue with the second page as if nothing happened. (To find a link that will open the new tab : at the top of the profile in edit mode you will find the words "Edit data, biographical text and sources for Joe below. After editing, click "Save Changes"." The person's name, in this example, "Joe" will be underlined, right click this and select "open in new tab".

I hope this helps

I was hoping there was something I had overlooked, guess not. Thanks for responding.

I had a second question. If I add a mother to an individual, an, upon saving the new profile, then add the father, there is a selection box at the bottom just above the Save button that says to check it if the child is also the child of the father. This box is not pre-selected; so, I have to click on it if the father just added is in fact the parent. However, running through a different sequence, I add a child to the mother and upon entering the new child's profile, there is a selection box at the bottom above the Save button, saying the child is also the child of the mother's spouse. This time the box is pre-selected.

I may have gotten the order wrong but my point is, the fact of it is pre-selected or it is not preselected is inconsistent. Seems to me it would be better for things to be consistent and you would be alert to noting is the particular situation is different.

Confusing, I don't know how to say it more simply. This is a programming or coding thing and probably isn't going to change.

That's true, it is a tech issue, and perhaps a good one to suggest in G2G ~ I'd love to see the responses you get!
Pam, you sent me a greeting and helped me with some question about three months ago. I have a new question. If you're available, thanks, if I should be asking someone else, please point me in the right direction.

I'm working with a profile (Love-394) managed by Larry Hayer (Hayer-4) Larry died early this month. I notice on his profile some family co-manage it with him. They may or may not respond. So, how do I move forward on this?

There are some other profiles for which I've submitted suggestions but I notice the managers have not made a contribution on recent history (years). Sending messages and posting comments seem pointless. What do you suggest?

Enjoy this fall weather.

Oh Stokes, that is terrible news! I'm so sorry to read this 🌼

A good thing to do is to email info@ wikitree.com and let them know. I didn't notice an advance directive on Larry's profile...but the team would know better, and they'll also know what to do.

For profiles where there are living managers - here's the help page that'll tell you how to deal with unresponsive profile managers.

I hope this helps, but do let me know if you're still unsure about anything.

Have a great evening / day!

...going into spring down here now, but thanks, and I hope that you enjoy the fall weather 😊

Good job, Stokes. It is gratifying to see this side of our tree being filled out. We appreciate your work.

Pippin, the maiden name or LNAB of an ancestor is incorrect. How do I get it changed? She is Hannah Watson White who married a White but her LNAB is showing as Watson. She is id Watson-14920

Stokes, you'll need to send a message to the profile manager (Harry White) and let him know. It'll help if you give him a source for your correction. Click on the "send private message" link beside Harry's name on that profile.

Hope this helps!
