Richard was born about 1852, likely at Newtownstewart, County Tyrone where his parents lived. ^[1] He was the son of John White and Mary Hutchinson.

He emigrated to Canterbury, New Zealand aboard the Opawa sailed 26 Sep 1877 to Canterbury; from County Tyrone, age 24. He was listed as a Farm Labourer here. Sister Catherine was on the same sailing. ^[2]

He passed away 24 Jan 1883, at his mother's residence, Kilmore street, age 30. ^[3]

He was buried the following day at Barbadoes St. Cemetery, plot 2270. ^{[4] [5]}

The association with these parents is based on:

• Being in the same number cemetery plot.
• There are records of Mary White living on Kilmore St as per the death notice.

The 1883 Wise's City Directory has a Richard White, blacksmith, Kilmore St. Not clear if this is the same person. ^[6]
