Joseph White was christened on 15 Jan 1804 at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Bolton, Lancashire (Catholic). He was the son of John White and Mary (Garner) White. His godparents were Pat Savage and Mary Bot.
Joseph married his first cousin Jane Garner on 11 Apr 1836 at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Bolton, Lancashire (Catholic), having obtained the required dispensation to allow them to marry despite their near family relationship. The witnesses were William Farren and Ann Farren.
Their son George was born on 24 Sep 1836, and christened on 25 Sep 1836 at St Alban's Church in Blackburn, Lancashire (Catholic). His godparents were Daniel Edleston and Mary Jackson.
Their son John was born on 27 Aug 1838, and christened on 2 Sep 1838 at St Alban's Church in Blackburn, Lancashire (Catholic). His godparents were John Moxham and Elizabeth Hodgson.
Joseph died in 1840 in Prescot district, aged 36. His wife had been born in Sutton, so they may have moved there to be nearer her family.
His widow Jane married John Holland in 1847, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.[1]
In 1851 they were living in St Helens.[2]
Jane died before the 1871 census.[3]
There were two Jane Garners who might be his wife.
1) Jane Garner (bef.1808-) daughter of George and Elizabeth. The family was Catholic and in 1861 Joseph's wife (now Jane Holland) had a boarder William Garner who was probably the son of George and Elizabeth.[4]
2) Jane Garner the daughter of Thomas Garner and Sarah Whittle, chr 26 Apr 1807 at St Nicholas' Cathedral in Liverpool (Anglican).[5] On the face of it this looks a less suitable match than the first one because of the family's religion, but it's been linked with Joseph's wife in a FamilySearch tree which also gives an exact date for Jane's 1847 marriage (13 April 1847), so the person who linked them may have had access to the full marriage record, which would name Jane's father. Because of that, it remains a strong candidate.
