L. P. WHITE IS DEAD.

BANKER PASSES AWAY AT TERRA ALTA.
––––––––
He Was Well Known and His Death Will be Heard of With Regret––Had Been Living in Washington.
Lewis P. White, president and general manager of the Bank of Whatcom, Whatcom, Washington, died last Thursday afternoon at 1:15 at the residence of his mother in Terra Alta after an illness of a few weeks of diabetis [sic]. Mr. White came back to his old home four weeks ago, hoping that his native mountain air would restore him to health again and for a few brief weeks it seemed as though he would recover, gradually growing stronger but on Sunday, July 5, he took a turn for the worse and continued to grow steadily weaker until death finally released him from his terrible suffering yesterday, as noted. The deceased was well and favorably known throughout the State of West Virginia, especially in baking circles, and the news of his demise will be received with every expression and manifestation of sorrow on the part of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. It was largely through his efforts that the Terra Alta bank was established some 10 years ago, and he was for several years cashier of that well known financial institution. Leaving Terra Alta in 1897 he, with Hon. William G. Brown of this place established a bank at Whatcom, Washington, during his residence there had met with much success financially, and was at the same time highly honored by appointment to several honorary offices by the governor of his State of his adoption. His health failing in the northwest, however, he finally determined to return to Terra Alta and re-entered business, and one of the first steps he made after returning to his old home was to take steps toward the establishment of a National Bank at Terra Alta. He was accompanied in this move by leading business men of Terra Alta and prospects were very bright, indeed, for a successful future for the proposed organization. Mr. White, upon returning to Terra Alta had left his family, temporarily at Whatcom and so sudden was his turn for the worse that the members could not reach Terra Alta in time to see the beloved head of the family alive. Mr. White was a Mason in high standing in the order and of high degree and that order will have charge of the funeral services, to occur at Terra Alta, today (Thursday) the remains being held this long in order that the family may arrive from Whatcom. The deceased was the youngest son of the late Thornton White, now deceased of Terra Alta, and a brother of William T. White, on of Preston county’s best known residents and was well and favorably known throughout his county and State, and was about 46 years of age.
The announcement of this death was received here with great sorrow.

Death’s Doings.
–––––––––––
As announced in these columns last week, Hon. Lewis Pindle White died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Thornton White, in Terra Alta, on Thursday July 9th, at 1:30 p. m., after one week’s illness of diabetes. He had been ailing with the disease since February, and had come home from Whatcom, Washington, for a vacation and rest in hopes of recovering his health, but was such a busy man that he could not remain idle, and had applied for a charter for a National Bank at Terra Alta, and was organizing one for that place when he was stricken down with a fatal disease. It was thought that he could not be kept till his family would arrive from the far northwest, and it was announced that he would be buried last Friday evening, but later he was embalmed and arrangements made to defer the funeral till his family would arrive, so the funeral takes place at Terra Alta to-day, Thursday, under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, as he was a member, being a Shriner.
Several went over from here to attend the funeral, which was to be held at the residence of his brother, Will T. White, at one o’clock, and interment in the Terra Alta cemetery. The deceased was 47 years of age in February last, and leaves a wife and eight children, four boys and four girls, in good circumstances, as he had $8,000 life insurance and had acquired considerable property in Washington State, where he had resided the past six years as manager of the Bank of Whatcom, and was President of the Board of Regents of the State Normal School of Washington. His wife was a daughter of George Burke, of near Terra Alta, and a sister of Kenneth E. Burke. The death of Mr. White is a great loss not only to his family but to the business world in general.

The Blade of Whatcom, Washington, last week contains the following editorial in regard to an old Prestonian––
Lewis P. White is dead, but only in body for the spirit of his honorable career will ever hover over the scenes of his active life. He was one of the men whom to know was to respect and to know more to respect more. He was a man in every sense of the word––active, honest and courteous. It was an honor to be called his friend. Coming to Whatcom six years ago, Mr. White established himself as an ardent and active worker for the advancement of Whatcom county, and his always honest methods made him a valuable ally in the industrial and commercial upbuilding of the cities on Bellingham Bay. There was no passive action for him. His was a type of manhood that should be an example for young men. The world is better for such men having lived. Other men could have been better spared.
