Most sources say James was born in 1840, however the article in Museum Graphics has his birth at 1849. He was the son of Francis aka Frank White Cloud and Mary Roubidoux. His Indian name is spelled different ways, including How-way-doe-hon, meaning "Many Days." This would be spelled in current system as hąwe "day" rohą "many." He was recognized generally as the last chief of the northern Ioways, though by the 20th century the office had become primarily honorary rather than having governing power. He was a veteran of the Civil War and of the Spanish American War. He died July 16, 1940.
