Biography

Charlotte was born in 1858. She is the daughter of Reverend John Whiteford and Mary Audley Whiteford.[1]

Baptism Date: 4 June 1858
Event Place: Bourne, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom[2]

Charlotte lived with her parents and siblings in Toynton St Peter, Lincolnshire, England.

In the Census of 1871 she was recorded with her siblings, one servant and one visitor in The Vicarage, Maidwell, Northamptonshire, England. Aged 13.

Occupation: Clergyman's Daughter

At the age of 19 Charlotte emigrated from England to Christchurch, New Zealand as an Assisted Immigrant, departing England on 25 November 1877, arriving on 13 February 1878. She travelled on the ship Wanganui. Her occupation was listed as Housemaid. Also on the ship were her three sisters Eleanor, Lucy and Fanny.[3]

She married widower Horace Melville D'Elmaine on 27 March 1880.[4]

They had at least two children; Mary and Jack. It would appear that Horace deserted his wife and two babies around the end of 1881.

Charlotte passed away in 1927 at the age of 69.

Burial

Friday 2 September 1927 - Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. Block number: 25A, Plot number: 60, Age: 69 years[5]
