George William WHITEHEAD was born on18 September 1866 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

His parents were George James and Mary Ann WHITEHEAD (formerly CLARK).

He married Rose Ann Elizabeth MAY on 10 November 1893 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Their first child was a girl Evelyn Ion May born on 2 June 1894.

Another daughter Verna Rose was born on 4 December 1903.

George and Rose lived at 490 Madras Street St Albans. Christchurch.

The house was demolished in the 1950s but several of the poplar trees he planted as a wind break survived until the start of the twenty first century.

He was a bespoke tailor employed by Herschfeild Tailors.

He was a keen gardener and when money was scarce during the depression (early 1930s) we made good use of the vegetables and fruit from his garden

. Bill as he was known died from prostate cancer on 21 December 1940. Rose died aged 92 on 24 March 1964.

'In his will dated 5th of November 1940 he leaves his furniture and personel belongings to his wife Rose Whitehead, his sewing machines and cash in Post Office savings to his daughter Evelyn Smeeton who he named as executor. (Her name was miss spelled Smeeton but established as Smeaton). Estate valued at 679 pounds and 7 pence.
