James was born about 1835, the son of Scott Whitelaw and Selina (Baynes) Whitelaw. According to the 1851 Census he was born in St Pancras, Middlesex.
1841 Census on the 6th June 1841 James was living at Marchmont Street, Bloomsbury, Middlesex with his parents Scott and Selina and his siblings Scott and George. John Wintle aged 40 was also living there.[1][2]
1851 Census on the 30th March 1851 James was living with his parents Scott and Selina and his siblings Scott and George at Whitmore Place West, Shoreditch, Middlesex.[3]
1861 Census on the 7th April1861 James a bookbinder forwarder, was living at 41 Providence Row, Islington, Middlesex with his widowed mother Selina.[4][5]
James married Sarah Caroline Maton and the marriage was registered in the 2nd quarter 1862 in Islington, Middlesex.[6]
1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 James a bookbinder, was living at 3 Manor Place, Holloway Road, Islington, Middlesex with his wife Sarah and their children Harry, Clara and Emily.[7][8]
1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 James a bookbinder, was living at 74 Woodstock Road, Hornsey, Middlesex, England with his wife Sarah and their children Harry, Clara, Selina, Annie and Kate, and his mother Selina.[9][10]
1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 James a bookbinder, was living at 68 Aubert Park, Islington, Middlesex with his wife Sarah and their children Clara, Emily, Selina, Annie, Kate and Charles.[11]
1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 James a bookbinder, was living at 68 Aubert Park, Islington, Middlesex with his wife Sarah.[12]
1911 Census on the 2nd April1911 James was living at 105 Englefield Road, Essex Road, Islington, Middlesex with his wife Sarah and their daughter Kate.[13]
James, of 105 Englefield Road, Essex Road, Islington, Middlesex, died aged 85 on the 3rd January 1921 and his death was registered in 1921 in Islington, Middlesex.[14][15]
Probate of James' estate, £110 7s. 7d., was granted on the 31st January 1921 in London and his daughter Kate Whitelaw was his beneficiary.[16][17]
